From the inbox: “Check out [this indie group]!!! They sound like: Eminem, KRS-One, FUGEES The, MOS DEF, BLACK EYED PEAS”… okay… first of all, Eminem, KRS-One, The Fugees, Mos Def, and Black Eyed Peas don’t even sound alike… and, having actually checked out that indie group… they don’t sound anything like any of the aforementioned groups… maybe it shouldn’t bother me so much, but i am sick and tired of “Christian” music trying their dangest to sound like “secular” music… or worse, claiming to sound like secular contemporaries and hoping that will boost their sales…

another example… i recently received a CD for review and having heard one of the potential singles from the album, commented to a friend that in that song, there were distinct sections where they sounded like three other groups and the song sounded like the other groups… so when i get the CD and the press release, i’m somewhat surprised to find that the press release mentions those exact groups by name (3 for 3)… basically saying, [this group] has a sound like [group 1, group 2, and group 3]… which made me think… since the rest of the album lacks those similarities, was that one song intended to mislead the audience?… are they clinging to secular comparisons to boost their sales?… i can only conclude that it was in fact the intention… and it’s pretty irritating, especially considering that the CD is fairly good on its own merits…

to further irritate me about that same press release… it also included the following line… “It’s not all about the music”… um… sorry, but yes it is… to be fair, having re-read that section, it led into a discussion about lyrics which is a viable argument… so i’m extending this statement to other groups in the CCM arena because i’ve heard it time and time again… “what do you think about [this group]?”… “they have a great ministry”… or “how can you give [this group] such a low rating? They have such a great ministry”… here’s the bottom line… if you are a professional musician, you should be judged (critiqued) based on your music… if i let your personal ministry, which you do on the side, apart from music, influence my review of you music, then i’m a bad reviewer… simple as that… here’s why… i spend my days working on computer programming and database development… when it comes time for my annual review, my boss doesn’t and shouldn’t care less if i’m a good father or a good husband… or that i’m a deacon at my church… or that i run the TRu and write for several other publications… his job is to evaluate my performance in the job i’m paid to do… professional musicians are paid to record music… that’s how they’re supposed to be evaluated… i think it’s great if they participate in missions trips and ministry… but that’s all on the side and has nothing to do with their music, (with a stunning recent exception from Caedmon’s Call, where they brought their mission work into the music and lyrics of their latest album)… anyway… there’s a rant for you… now, i’m sorry, but i gotta go, i’m about to do a something…

ok real quick some oddities that have boggled my mind…

i burned my finger the other day… a real burn, with a scab and everything… where did i burn it you ask? on my freezer’s ice maker… there’s some sort of an exposed wire back there or something… but man… ouch…

    i got a prescription recently… the dosage is 15 mL… the bottle contains 463 mL… WHY?…

according to the leading weather reporters… we had a 100% chance of rain last night and it didn’t rain…

    i’m sure there’s more… but i’ll leave you with a few lyrics that i’ve enjoyed today… (guess what i’d like to do?)…

    yo, i’m feelin’ fine thanks…
    it’s about time thanks…
that i cashed a mic check at the rhyme banks
    it finally paid off
    never got laid off…
i’m clocking out and i’m taking every day off…
    it’s about time i quit my job….

so i’m kind of back… i’m just really tired at this point… last night littler boy decided i shouldn’t get much sleep… and then i ended up oversleeping by like 45 minutes… which was close to the longest stretch of sleep i got all night… see, my alarm went off and scared me half to death, and i hit it, intending to snooze for nine more minutes… and instead i apparently turned it off entirely and woke up 45 minutes later… no big deal though i guess… just got a later start to the day… so then i got in to work and i was fine for most of the morning, but man am i dragging…

so okay… let’s see… i really can’t put any thoughts together right now… i’m gonna try to do some things and hopefully things will grow clearer…

anyone miss me yet?… am i asking too much?… well… it’s been a busy time for being mostly off of work… but hey, you just can’t beat the commute or the company… man, this is the way to do things… now i just need to find a way to get paid to stay home and, i don’t know write maybe?… anyway… here are a few random thoughts that have occurred to me in the last week or so…

  • Gilmore Girls has jumped the shark… yep, there’s no way around it… although i think it’s still worth watching… it’s like they decided to jump the shark intentionally to prove that they can still go on beyond it… like tempting fate… also related… i think it’s hilarious that the lead singer from Skid Row is a semi-regular… that’s priceless…
  • woah!… Mos Def released another CD today… i don’t know how i missed it… but, i so need to pick it up…
  • i like the yankees… why? because they are so good at the basics… they always have been… it’s fun to watch…
  • the Presidential campaign feels a lot like a popularity contest… at least on one side…

and now some things that you should’ve read recently…

  • Smokie Norful Review at CMC
  • Kiki Sheard Review at Renown Magazine
  • Sintax.the.Terrific Review at Renown Magazine
  • Walk TRu for Derek Webb’s The House Show
