February 2005

ok so i’m taking a quick five minutes or so to get some things written down before they end up lost forever as has happened several times… as witnessed by the numerous scraps of paper with notes scribbled down that i’m supposed to revisist and expand on… yeah… that might happen… anyway… don’t tell Josh because i’m supposed to be working on a review for him… he’ll never know… silly Canadian… it’s not like he doesn’t do his best to distract me anyway…

so let’s see if i can nab all those topics i teased you about in the last entry… lets see…

all about my swollen tonsils… i woke up Sunday with a sore throat… not like really horribly sore or anything but kind of like that feeling in the back of your throat that lets you know that you’re about to come down with a cold… funny thing is that Friday i had a conversation about people getting sick and about how i pretty much never get sick… other than a minor cold or whatever… so i didn’t think much of it Sunday and went to church and all the day’s festivities without any real setbacks… Monday… day off… i wake up and my throat is throbbing… and aching… aching and throbbing… well… i just continue to ignore it… swish some Listerine (feel the burn baby)… and i go save little boy from the tortures of playing in his room alone… so we pick up all the toys and head downstairs, hoping to afford littler boy and my wife a bit more time resting… (it’s still in the 7’s at this point)… so we ended up going about the day without too many problems but my throat, oh man, my throat… i finally broke down and looked at my throat in the mirror… i have never seen my tonsils so big… so naturally, i say… “i gotta get these things snipped!”… i mean, it’s not like they do anything… what purpose do tonsils really serve anyway… just get them out!… everyone gets them taken out these days… after some counsel from my half-asleep wife, i called for a doctor’s appointment… it wasn’t exactly easy to speak, or breathe, or swallow, or anything… but i managed to get an appointment for 4PM that day… seven full hours later…

like why we all blog… i was tempted to write an entry titled why do bloggers blog or something less self inclusive… but since i would be posting it all in a blog… the personal pronoun was far more fitting… anyway… we the heck do we blog?… i know for me i’m a writer and i have a gigantic ego that makes me think that you all hang on every word that i type… of course i’m not embellishing or imagining… but as for the rest of you (and sometimes myself)… could it be that we need validation?… as if to say, please somebody think that the day i spent, or the thoughts i just shared were somehow worth 1 or 2 eProps… please tell me that it wasn’t all in vain… can i get an eAmen?… or perhaps it’s more than that… perhaps, and i often question this of myself, we want friendship but we lack, or lazily refuse to utilize, the social skills needed to build these relationships close to home… it’s too much work… with friends you see physically day-to-day you are actually held accountable for what you agree to do for them… for the prayers you say you’ll extend… for the needed comfort you freely offer… it takes time and effort… you can’t click “invisible” on your AIM window… you can’t log off and walk away… it’s real life… and the street goe both ways… you suddenly become vulnerable… friends can read your face… notice pain in your tone of voice… know if you’re sincere or not… know when you are hurting more than you’d like to admit… it takes time… energy… effort… and honesty… more than we’re willing to spend… has blogging become our Tarshish?… no, i’m not going to stop blogging… no, i’m not suggesting that you need to either… i’m not throwing any stones… i’m simply posing a question… pointing out a possibility that i may find myself susceptible to as soon as anyone else… why do i blog… why do we blog… maybe it’s a question we should ask ourselves daily…

the tonsils… so i put myself on a regiment of coffee (for the heat)… Listerine (for the cleansing burn)… and halls cough drops and vitamin C boosters (for fast and soothing relief)… and we headed out to enjoy my day off from work… it was President’s Day and that means furniture sales galore… apparently, we always need new furniture… this is of course a benefit of having a new house that is significantly larger than the last… so, we hit up some of the sales… as my throat ached, i mingled with sales clerks sporting bad hairdos and horrifying outfits… they greeted us with plastic smiles and fake laughter, commented on how cute our boys are (and indeed they are)… i replied with a thank you i’m just looking and tried not to gag on what felt like a bait worm flopping on the very back of my tongue…

the books i’ve finished reading and the ones i’m starting… i finished reading The Magician’s Nephew from the Chronicles of Narnia series… i had decided to revisit these books a while back… probably a year and a half ago actually and i finally started last month… little bits here and there when i get a chance during the day… i know, i know… i’m reading them in the faulty, pre-packaged, now it’s a boxed set order, but i really didn’t want to take the time to look up the proper order… anyway… i was quite impressed with the whole creation account in this books… and of course Uncle Digory was quite the suitable foil…before i get started into The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, however, i’m taking a brief break from the fiction and diving into The Abolition of Man also by CS Lewis… i actually started it yesterday and later realized that i should’ve waited until Monday since it’s a pretty heavy book and splitting my attentions between it and the weekend isn’t the most advantageous idea… anyway… i’m also picking away at The Late, Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey… i don’t really know why, but i was somehow drawn to this book and even though i laugh a lot reading it, it’s not supposed to be a funny book… anyway… i also just read the 9.5 Thesis On Worship from last month’s Christianity Today and it was a really interesting read… good points made… especially considering that this week’s reviews at CMC are going to be worship projects… (please don’t let that deter you from reading them…

the tonsils… so we didn’t buy anything at the first store, maybe it was the lack of selection… maybe it was the air of mystery about the salesclerk which i think was actually a combination of her hairspray and cheap perfume… anyway, we headed over to another store and found a much nicer attendant and some fitting pieces of furniture there… and my throat started to clear up as we walked around… well as i chased little boy around and he found all the dog and duck statues in the store, kissed them and yelled their names… ah, it was great fun and as it was approaching lunch time we headed back home to eat and give the appropriate littles naps and food… i had bagel bites the little pizza things on mini bagels and swallowed just fine… maybe my throat would heal up before the doctor’s appointment… maybe that’s their goal and cheap way of increasing their “batting average”… maybe…

speaking of starting… i came across a great new topic to write about which is something i need like i need a bowling ball dropped on my head… thanks to Superchic[k] for the great analogy… i really need to buckle down and get some of my writing projects started and finished… i am starting to work more with the church as i’ve signed on to coordinate the communications and “publicity’ for various outreach projects… should be pretty cool… and of course, keep me busy…

the tonsils… so it got around four o’clock and i headed over to the doctor’s office… apparently President’s Day is a good time not only to get deals on furniture, but also to get sick… the waiting room was pretty packed and they were playing Fear Factor on the television… honestly, the twenty minutes i spent in the waiting room were the only twenty minutes i recall ever watching that show… they were apparently trying to jump from one speedboat to another while the boats were in motion… doesn’t seem too scary to me but hey the trash talking was pretty hilarious… so finally my number is called… or rather my name… and i get the priviledge of going back to see the nurse… she weighed me and took me to the room to get me ready for the doctor… she had a really think Eastern European accent so i couldn’t understand her all that well… we had some difficulties taking my blood pressure because apparently my sleeves were too tight for my bulging biceps… or something… but everything checked out fine and we proceeded to a series of questions about symptoms… apparently “my throat is killing me and my tonsils are swollen” isn’t thorough enough of a description… anyway, after a bit of questioning… she asked me if i wanted to “do this”… to which i replied “sure,” thinking she meant that she wanted to stop the nonsense of “ear ache?” “no” “do your ears itch?” “no” etc…. apparently she meant something else, because she started telling me how most people don’t let them do this and that it’s okay to say no, but it will be good to try… then i started wondering two things… 1. should i have said yes to “hard of hearing”… and 2. what on earth did i agree to?…

oh and my new… yeah so i’ve managed to carve out enough time to get the new design for TRu-dAT.music entirely squared away… well… for the most part… of course there’s still a lot of tweaks to be made… and then my attention was drawn to the fact that Firefox/Mozilla made my site look pretty nasty… and then of course World of CM launched a brilliant design this week… so i’ve curbed the release to make as many aesthetic changes as possible to accommodate the browser snobs… and also to avoid riding in the wake of WoCM… but soon folks… really soon… i mean… it’s right there… just waiting… anyway…

the tonsils… she returned with a swab and a tongue depressor… apparently i agreed to a strep test which means she holds down my tongue and jams the swab as far back as possible trying to scrape cells off of the tonsils or throat… it’s a great way to gag… anyway… she couldn’t do it properly and she apparently got pretty upset at me for… i don’t know… gagging or whatever… so i had to wait for the doctor to come in and gag me the right way… then after another question and answer session, he left promising to be back in 4-5 minutes… twenty-five minutes went by before he finally returned saying that i didn’t have strep… but i did have tonsillitis… which is kind of a bummer… but after some antibiotics, i’d be fine… and it’s not contagious so i could still go to work… yee ha…

circling back around slightly… if you hadn’t getten enough end times goodness with the horribly written twelve part… okay, never mind that’s a mean thing to say… on an *unrelated* note… there’s a prequel coming out to the Left Behind series… perhaps they decided that it was time to actually develop the characters… okay… i’ll stop… i promise…

the tonsils…so i head over to my local SUPERTarget to drop off my prescription and as i’m pulling into the parking lot i see an odd situation unfolding… a small pickup truck had started to pull out from the curb and up one of the aisles only to thunk into a middle-aged lady trying to cross the street… seriously… threw the lady a number of feet and she konked her head on the pavement and was just laying there… bystanders instantly surrounded the victim and i’m sure if it’s possible 911 was jammed… everyone has a cell phone these days especially in this area… and the lines were all lit up reporting this event… i have no idea how it turned out… i prayed as i walked by, knowing that there was nothing that i could do personally and as i was leaving, the EMTs had arrived and were treating the victim… kinda made my swollen tonsils a bit less important…

So i got the new Kutless CD kind of… (Sir Janke is officially off the hook)… what i don’t understand is why i get such third rate servicing… i mean, i really shouldn’t complain… music is music, but it seems like… okay, check this out… the KJ-52 CD i got was a burnt disc on a CDr so cheap that the sharpie marker used to label it bled through the entire disc… ergo, the CD skipped and it was a pain in the butt to even hear half of the songs… this Kutless one as better in that it wasn’t written on and hasn’t skipped yet… but still… what’s the deal?… anyway… the Kutless album isn’t as bad as i thought it would be… then again… well, you’ll have to wait for the review…

the tonsils… so i didn’t get my tonsils taken out despite my initial thoughts… imagine that… i was willing to undergo surgery just like that… and as it turns out… tonsils do server a purpose… they act as the gatekeepers to your body… apparently when you inhale some viruses or whatnot, they will block a good number of the ones that could cause problems for your immune system… so while i was griping about them being swollen… they may have prevented a much more serious illness… very interesting to consider…

so this year, the trend is to release an album of hymns… Ashley Cleveland, Jars of Clay, Out of Eden, everyone’s getting in on the action… i think it’s pretty cool… i appreciate the lyrical depth and honesty of hymns… it’s generally a far better form of worship than the praise choruses… anyway… the entries i’ve heard thus far are pretty phenomenal

the tonsils (concluded)… For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them. . . ” – Romans 12:4-6a (New King James Version)… whether your purpose is appreciated or not… widely known or buried as an obscure fact… serve it… and serve it well… to God be the glory…

so this entry started Friday and ended today… the review was written Phanatik The Incredible Walk… and three other entries have already begun… they will be sitting on the stove for a bit though… as this one is so long… i would like to make sure it has it’s appropriate time in the spotlight…

oh yeah… so i have a blog… and i suppose i should update it again… i’m not sure if i have a legitimate excuse or not, but i simply can’t keep track of the time, days, anything anymore… it’s like life revolves around Tuesdays… and i spend too much time in between Tuesdays trying to get copies of the right CDs… so i can disappear for a couple hours and review them and start the process over again… not that i’m complaining per se… but sheesh… it should be so much easier to get ahold of these albums… i mean… at least RESPOND TO YOUR EMAILS… yeah, you know who you are… anyway… the reviews i did this week over at CMCentral are as follows… broke six hundred this week, by the way… no not me personally… but you get the idea…

  • Day of Fire – Day of Fire
  • Kara Williamson – Undisguised
  • Phanatik – The Incredible Walk
  • The Afters – I Wish We All Could Win
  • i have so much more i’d like to talk about… like why we all blog… all about my swollen tonsils… the books i’ve finished reading and the ones i’m starting… speaking of starting… well… see… i have no time though… it will all come to fruition soon enough… oh and my new…

    I love you, you numb my pain, when I get… Overloaded… You’re voice is my novacaine… when I feel… Overloaded… . . . Life’s got me overloaded… I’m living way too overloaded… ” – 4th Avenue Jones (Overloaded)

ooh, yeah… so i’m treating my ears over and over with this new 4th Ave CD… this song in particular is like woah… what a great worship song… ha ha… that made you all do a double take now didn’t it?… anyway… the future holds much more for this album and myself… so i’ll save some up for then…

so why is it that the evil geniuses and criminal masterminds get all the press and attention… what about those of us with noble intentions… wait… did i just call myself a genius?… maybe on some level… certainly in scrabble… in fact, i’ve decided that my new nickname is “The Scrabbster”… which is obviously short for Scrabble Master… You’ll. Never. Shut. Down. the REAL. Scrabbster.

anyway… here’s this week’s links to the CMCentral reviews… they went up Wednesday instead of Thursday because i was a little overloaded… but we’ll just pretend it’s because one of the reviews was for the new Anberlin album which includes the song “Day Late Friend“…

  • Stellar Kart – All Gas, No Brake
  • Steve Green – Somewhere Between
  • Eisley – Room Noises
  • Anberlin – Never Take Friendship Personal
  • so blogging has caught on in my office… i guess it’s been around here for a while, but no one ever really talked about it… now it’s not uncommon to hear my coworkers discussing something they read on one another’s blogs… not that there’s anything wrong with it… though, i’ll admit, even if i know what they’re talking about… i pretend not to… i don’t know… i guess i’d rather hear it from them rather than reading it on a blog… it’s somewhat sad that the most open form of communication WITHIN THE OFFICE is either through blogging or through AIM… i guess we do have an open prayer time in the mornings once a week, but i’d have to fight the traffic and i’ve decided against that… maybe i should… as it stands now, anyway… it looks like my cavalier attitude towards the blogging craze has allowed this blog to stay under the radar for the time being… not that it’s a huge deal… i’m not all that interesting anyway so chances are, no one would expect my blog to be either…

You know what i can’t stand?… bathroom sinks that are mounted at my knee height… seriously… if i have to bend over to wash my hands… i just get irritated… it’s not like i’m extremely tall, (i’m only around six feet tall)… and it’s not like i’m living in Japan… what’s the deal?

Also annoying is people who ignore your emails… GAH!… i just have to remember that God has a purpose for them too…

so i prepped my Doves, rather GMA Music Awards, nomination commentary last night… hopefully tonight i’ll get around to pumping out the actual comments and picks etc… i had to tweak the design a bit from last year’s piece… man… there’s just so much to do these days… and i have a meeting set up next week to talk about how i can serve more at the church…

Oh, speaking of church… i was in a conversation the other day about our church and a potential building expansion project… the church i attend draws about a thousand attendees a week, split out over three services and what we’d like to do is be able to have everyone in the sanctuary rather than spilling some into the “overflow room”… the problem, as with many things here in the world, is that we don’t have the money to build again… we already still owe a significant amount on the original building project… now… let’s get one thing straight… there’s a lot of money in our church… a LOT… there are some seriously wealthy folks attending each week… so much so that if everyone was tithing money wouldn’t be an issue at all… so, why is it a problem?… because people don’t tithe… this topic actually came up the other day on the forums… some people are actually opposed to the idea of tithing… they argue that since the New Testament set us free from much of the Mosaic and Levitical laws, that the obligation of tithing was also done away with as well… i actually got my head bitten off when i pointed out that it was possible and very likely that this justification was rooted in a love of money… but anyway… riddle me this… if we weren’t supposed to tithe… why did Jesus praise the widow for giving a mite and chastise the rich man for giving less than ten percent of his wealth?… or why did the Church as it was founded in Acts ask for members to give all their possessions to support the church?… there are plenty of examples… the point is… if you love money, you aren’t fully devoted to God… simple as that…

and with that… i shall disappear at the height of controversy… it’s a trick i learned long ago… get people all riled up and then walk away… that way they remember you forever…

another day another dollar twenty four… (inflation you know)… anyway… i was back in the office today and busy as the mayor of Flibber-O-Loo… anyway… rundown of cheap promotions… there was a new Moment of TRu dropped last week… and just today i dropped a gigantic Morning Walk TRu on Switchfoot’s The Early Years… thirty-two tracks and almost TWO HOURS of music… yeah… it’s the biggest Morning Walk TRu ever… (unless you combine the two-partners from early on in the Walk TRu history)… Also around the web… those hip hopfor the soul reviews found their way to the light of day… behold i present to you… Man of War – Love & War and Shai Linne – The Solus Christus Project… two very impressive albums… and some reviews that might not irritate you too much…

so anyway.. i should get going so that i can give you links to this week’s CMCentral reviews tomorrow… which means that i need to write them… ah… still procrastinating after all these years…

man, i’m tired… however, i need to catch up on some emails and uh… this and that… and it seems that the best time to do it is when i’m already bleary-eyed and totally ready to zonk out… then again, i’m pretty much like that all the time, anymore… so, anyway… i survived the first week of being a suddenly single daddy and my reward is… another week… yikes… and more to come in the future… i tell you what… cancer freaking STUNKS… anyway… we had the foyer painted on Friday, and i made it in to the office for a few hours… they had actually changed the entrance codes and such so, well, at least they let me in… the uh climate at work seems to be somewhat okay actually… i will still refrain from too much commenting on that situation though…

Superbowl tomorrow… i’m somewhat excited… not nearly like i expected to be… i think it will be a great game and i’m sure i’ll have fun watching it… many of you know i’ve been watching the past Superbowls this week… (i have the last six on tape)… and as i was watching, it was kind of weird… memories were stirred up and frankly, i’m pretty surprised that i even look forward to Superbowls anymore… it was during the Superbowl XXXV (Ravens and Giants) that i found out my grandfather had died… the following year, my other grandpa was in the hospital with low expectations of living too much longer… (he made it about a month more i think, but it was touch and go for a while)… and then of course this year isn’t exactly the ideal experience thus far… ah well… i guess it just helps keep things in perspective… anyway… i’m pretty much done… i’ll probably be offline most of tomorrow… so if i don’t see you… GO Pats!

oh… i listened to a lot of hip hop today… had to win my buddy over to Mars Ill… silly guy, still not totally sold… but, just shows you the kind of friend i am… a lesser man would’ve just cut him…

    the buzzing won’t stop:

so the correct answer to that question is WORK!… jeepers… what a time to be working from home… it seems i survived a few, uh, staff consolidation efforts… my new officemate unfortunately did not… that kind of stinks… well, it really stinks for him…

so… it looks like i’ll be playing the role of single dad for another week and a half yet… i love being with little boy, but i wish it were under better circumstances… ah… duties call… i’ll try to update more later… right now i’m about halfway through an 18-page report… fun fun fun…

so i did get some reviews done for CMC this week… check ’em out and let me know what you think… your feedback is valuable and important…
