Is it possible to get sunburn in the dead of winter?… inside?… yeah… so my neck feels like it’s been cooked up and i’m supposed to be eating lunch… but my tummy’s not feeling quite right… could be i’m just thinking of the week ahead… could be that someone’s got the heat cranked up in the office and my normally friendly vent is belching angry heat down upon me… and little pieces of paper or something fall out once in a while too… it’s kind of scary… anyway… looking at all the things i want to cover in this update… i think by the end i might also have a case of whiplash… i doubt i’ll get to it all but let’s see what happens…

first off… an update on the phantom phone software… it works now… ties up all my computer’s resources while it’s connected, but it does work… now to figure out the best way to convert mars ill into ringtones… so consumer complaint maniac has not been summoned to wreak havoc on the offices of Susteen Inc… however, since i’m sure you’re all very saddened at missing out on an opportunity to laugh along with my communications… i have decided to release a transcript of a recent conversation with a telemarketing agent… mmm… i warn you… do not call me…

he:mr gambiT?
me:yessir
he:how are you today?
me:oh, i’m just fabulous, how about you?
he:the reason i… oh, i’m doing alright, thanks
me:hey, no problem… how can i be of help tonight?
he:well, my name is Craig and i’m calling on behalf of the policeman’s brotherhood association…
me:that’s great Carl, hey listen, you don’t mind if i eat while we talk do you? i don’t want to be rude or anything…
he:it’s Craig, but am i interrupting your dinner? is this a bad time?
me:is it ever a good time Kyle?
he:uh
me:so what’s shaking at the brotherhood?
he:uh, well… the reason why i’m calling is because we’d like for you to support… [blah blah blah]…
me:sounds interesting
he:… and for your donation, we’ll give you a sticker that you can display on your car to show that you supported the brotherhood
me:so how many miles over the speed limit does that buy me, Curtis?
he:i’m sorry?
me:how much faster do i get to go as a supporter of the brotherhood?
he:oh, no that’s not how it works…
me:oh no? why else would i want the sticker?
he:um, to show your support of this…
me:rolling stops? can you give me that at least?
he:that’s really not what this is about…
me:it’s ok, Clint, this can be off the record…
he:i don’t think you understand…
me:so if i don’t donate, what’s that do for my chances of getting pulled over?
he:excuse me?
me:well, do you have my license plate listed there or something?
he:no sir, that’s..
me:well, this all sounds kind of like organized crime doesn’t it?
he:how’s that?
me:extortion maybe? i donate, i get to speed… i don’t donate i get pulled over the next time i go to work…
he:um no no… i never said that…
me:well look, i don’t want to have any part of this little scheme, it sounds a little to dirty to me…
he:but it’s for the kids…
me:well, i’m gonna take my chances with the angry patrol officers…
he:but sir…
me:hey, listen, you have yourself a splendid evening Carlos… i’m gonna get back to my dinner…
he:um…
me:that’s a no thanks… goodbye…
he:goodbye

it’s interesting to note that the very next day i saw three cars pulled over in my neighborhood… i’m not saying there’s a connection, but these are the first three cars i’ve seen pulled over in our development…

also this entry… The Ghost in the Machine returns… yes, yes… i know this takes things waaaaaaay back… i had to dig through my archives to make sure i knew which part i was on… and as it seems… the last edition of GIt’M was in fact the ninth, back on 03 August… to refresh your memories and update… that episode was “the phantom folder” and dealt with an indestructable folder that kept returning to my desktop despite being deleted several times… as it turns out, i resolved this issue when i discovered that the phantom folder was named as a default “save as” folder for some software i was using… hence… whenever the software was running in the background, it recreated the folder so that it would have a place to call home… ok… so here we go… this one’s for my old-school, die-hard, dedicated, long-term, back-in-the-day readers… as well as anyone else who stumbles upon this entry… so basically it’s for anyone really… ok…

The Ghost in the Machine (Part Ten): MS-BS(oD)…

so… it was about two weeks ago that my trusty laptop turned on me… i’m sitting at home, reclined on the couch, typing up some stuff… and littler boy needs some attention, so i sit up, put my laptop down on the coffee table get him, come back and…. BLUE SCREEN… man… first time i’ve ever blue screened on this laptop which i’ve had for about two years… anyway… i shook it off and rebooted… trying to maintain composure and get back to work… and later on i blue screened again and decided that i was done for the night… and so began the process of troubleshooting and discovering the root of the problem…

my first thought was that it might be the CD drive as it’s removable and could easily be the culprit… so i made sure that was secure… then i explored some other options and went through most of the week without a hitch… however, towards the end of the week… the blue screen returned and i was pretty fiesty about it… it got me three times in one evening… and then the next day was riddled with BSoD’s and frustration… so i went through the process of checking all of my drivers and made sure everything was compatible… ran a bunch of diagnostics… and decided that maybe it was my lid (display) that was loose… well… i messed around with things again and then Thursday night it all came to a head when i got mad enough that i wanted to throw things… thrice blue screening and delaying my work, keeping me up ’til after midnight… and finally it dawned on me… it only blue screens at home…

so i isolated the potential problems and it came down to MSN dialup access complete with MSN Messenger… i grabbed little boy and went on a journey to procure the latest and greatest free MSN install CD at “daddy’s toy stores” (Best Buy and Circuit City)… neither store carries MSN internet CDs anymore… so we left with a copy of the latest earthlink CD… got home, cancelled MSN, uninstalled every last trace of MSN internet and installed earthlink… problem resolved…

to summarize… Microsoft’s internet service (MSN) and Microsoft’s instant messenger (MSN Messenger) cause my laptop which is running on Microsoft’s operating system (XP) to crash relentlessly… makes perfect sense… (note: yes i know dialup is wretched, but it’s my decision not yours)…

ok… so let’s see here… if i had any remaining doubts about the quality of this year’s season of Alias… they were all forgotten after last week’s episode… what an amazing bit of writing that was… the plot twists and such… man… here i was gearing up for the predictable Sydney/Jack rivalry with Nadia/Sloan, forcing Vaughn and Weiss into a difficult decision… and now… oh man now it’s all wide open again… three cheers…

I’ve also been watching the new Law and Order series “Trial by Jury”… eh… i mean it’s good and all… but it’s just another subseries so far, waiting for that one memorable episode which clearly defines it as it’s own…

i watched the Star Wars trailer… and that looks good… i’m actually going to be watching episodes 1,2 and 4-6 sometime in the coming weeks… because i can… anyway… it’s interesting that Lucas is calling this episode the darkest ever and saying that it’s unsuitable for younger viewers… more interesting that the wacky theology seems to still be in place… very deconstructionalist Lucas is…

with that… i’ll leave you well… maybe not yet… my reviews have been turned in… by the way… but posting them has been delayed due to a technical mishap… minor mishap… also involved in this little glitch… all the reviews that i’ve written previously… have been renumbered… meaning if you click on the links in previous entries… you’re likely to get some silly news article from a couple years ago… i went back and edited a couple of the recent ones… but once things sort out entirely, i’ll just list them all in one entry so that can become the reference point for all your bdg/CMC desires… and now i’ll get to bed… or something… i am working from home again this week and next, as well as being “daddymommy” while my wife and littler boy take care of my mother in law… i do have lots more to say… but now’s not gonna work for me… my apologies that there’s not anything terribly thoughtful about this entry… it’s just how the lot was cast…
