EDIT: HA! i just got a phone call informing me that i just won an iPod!  how funny is that?

EDIT AGAIN: to clarify, as i’m looking back at the contest… It’s apparently an iPod Mini loaded with “OVER 30 HOURS of audio!”… looks like audio versions of Wild at Heart, The Five Love Languages, Every Man’s Battle, and Johnny Cash Reads the complete New Testament… i suppose among other items…

still have this nagging, nagging cough… it’s driving me insane… as i think back over the years of my life, sure, i know i’ve had worse… but right now… this is the worst and most annoying ailment EVER!… also, the rest of the family has contracted some form of this illness… little boy seems to be finishing up with the brunt of it, but he too is stuck with a nagging cough and periodic fever… and littler boy, ah the poor dear, had a fever all day yesterday which meant that i held him almost all day so he could sleep in some comfort… he doesn’t like to be alone… which was fine, but with my wife getting sick too, i kind of felt bad leaving for the night last night… but… oooh wee… i went to a Mat Kearney and Mute Math concert… yay… so i’ll have a write up of that posted soon… of course… i do have plenty of other things to tend to… including reviews… i sent one off to Renown just this morning… and Josh, that amazing Canadian that makes all us Americans second-guess our superiority over all Canadians, is so fast that it’s already posted… i bet he didn’t even proof-read it, HA!… anyway, check out my take on Pigeon John Sings the Blues… in other review news… i’m still uncertain as to what will fill out the four for CMC this week… yes… i still only have one… grr… at least it won’t seem as bad since last week’s are still finding their way onto the web… besides reviews, there’s work to be done… and in other writing projects… a slew of features for the TRu, including, but not limited to, a full-blown write-up of the Elms DVD, a new Walk TRu, and the new playlist thingamabob… well, you all knew i was a busy guy anyway…

oh, before i forget, if you have iTunes and you looked through my playlist… please rate it… here’s what you do… click the link… then where it says rating, pick between 1 and 5 stars… be honest with it and feel free to be brutal… it’s not like i’ll know who rated what…

So what am i working on right now?… honestly, i’ve been picking through the list of television shows on DVD over at TVShowsOnDVD.com and making a list of all the ones i wouldn’t mind owning… part of this was spurred on because this weekend i picked up Season One of Boomtown for eighteen bucks at Best Buy… it’s normally $48… anyway… so far, this is what i’m interested in…

    1. 21 Jumpstreet
    2. Alias
    3. The A-Team
    4. The Bullwinkle Show
    5. Columbo
    6. Dilbert
    7. Friends (if only for the sake of feeling completed… i have seasons 1-4)
    8. Gilmore Girls
    9. Greatest American Hero (actually, i don’t remember how good it was, but i think i’d like it)
    10. Jim Henson’s The Storyteller
    11. Kung Fu
    12. Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (doesn’t appear to be available)
    13. Lost
    14. Magnum PI (maybe)
    15. Monk
    16. The Muppet Show (but i want it by season, not a bunch of Best Of nonsense.)
    17. Newsradio
    18. The Office
    19. Seinfeld
    20. Sports Night
    21. The Twilight Zone (Collections 2-5)
    22. Without a Trace

note. i’m not willing to pay for all of these… i just think they would be fun to have… also, i might have included the Law & Order (CI, SVU, regular) DVD sets as well but the reruns are on so stinkin much that honestly, who needs them?… it’s also pretty disturbing to know that Season 2 of Boomtown (all 6 episodes) isn’t currently available and there aren’t any known plans to make them available… it’s disturbing, because i just know that they’re gonna be idiots about it and rebox season one with the extra six episodes and that’s the only way it will be available… dirty hookers…

note: if the pejorative “dirty hookers” offends or bothers you in some way, please accept my apologies… it’s simply a term that i’ve used for many years… anyway…

so… i guess i’ll make an exit right now… maybe i can accomplish something grand today… though, i might just pick up my car from the shop… anyway… i’m gonna try… remember… dill pickles and orange juice don’t mix very well…

EDIT: i guess no one likes my toilet humor… anyway… a new Moment of TRu is up… peep dAT… and have a great weekend…

It’s Friday morning and i feel good… well, i’m actually still coughing up a whole bunch of junk and i forgot my cell phone at home… but… i won… let me explain…

There’s only one bathroom on our floor here at work… and i haven’t been able to find another one in the building… but it’s close to the middle of all the offices… our office is on one end of the building and there’s another on the opposite end… well, as i headed out the door this morning to visit the bathroom… there was another with the same intention coming from the opposite direction… our eyes locked from a great distance, and the challenge was issued… knowing full well that there’s only one stall available, i quickened my pace a bit… the trick though is not to visibly speed up… you still have to look casual… so, i’m heading down the hall swiftly while still maintaining a calm demeanor, knowing full well that if i didn’t succeed, i would have at least twenty minutes before i would experience the necessary relief… (i abide by a twenty minute waiting period between someone else using a public toilet and my own usage)… and the odds were against me… the men’s room is not equidistant from both ends of the hallway… it is at least 10 steps closer to the other end… but, as we approached the door, it became clear that i had gained a two step lead and was through first… victory!… the downside is that while i was using the facilities, he was standing by the door waiting the whole time, so it was a little uncomfortable… but much less than a twenty minute wait would’ve been…

ahhh… today could very well be a good day… and it appears that my “t” key is functioning properly again!

    ps. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIZZLE!!!!!!11111!!1111!!1!!

right quick… the TRu has my reactions to the GMA Music Award Results posted… pretty fast huh?… well i need to do something, since my traffic has all but vanished this month… seriously… i know that people are peeping… but the month is half over and i’ve only had about 15% of my normal month’s traffic… what’s up with that?… speaking of drastic… here’s something new for you to enjoy… my latest playlist… other than that… i do have a lot to talk about but i need to get getting… enjoy…

For reference…. the following commentary is based on my last “palate cleansing icon” iMix… i make these once in a while to listen to in between Tuesdays to clear my head and gather my thoughts on reviewing downtimes… i’ll try to do it more regularly… in fact, i’m considering it as a new regular feature at the TRu… (though i expect that future editions will only consist of around 13 tracks)… so take a breeze through this one and let me know if it’s worth it… anyway, since, average joe’s can’t have the fancy playlist on iTunes… we’ll have to settle for a simple iMix and commentary here… off we go…

“21st Century Darlings” (track 1): ah… kevin max is back in full force… nice euro-pop sound, killer chops… love the guitars on this one…

“A Minute to Ourselves” (track 2): for some reason, i’ve been on a big “early Elms” kick.. something about this debut release that’s just like woah… you know? fresh pop leanings and beautiful melodies…

“Binary” (not in iTunes): it’s a shame that this album isn’t in iTunes… on the other hand, it is an album that relies a lot on the big picture… so in a way it makes sense… with a nod to the Beattitudes, Binary brings to light a new way to live your life in the midst of the world around us…

“Borrow Mine” (track 3): beautiful.. .simply beautiful lyrics on this track… Bebo nails this song… encouraging, touching, and ever so pleasant to listen to…

“Burn For You” (track 4): Toby pulls out his best Sting impersonation on this track that is very reminiscent of “The Police” days… it’s a really hot track actually… love the driving beat… makes me want to speed in my car… ok, i speed anyway, but this song is one of my many excuses…

“End of October” (track 5): I’m a pretty big fan of the music that the David Crowder Band pumps out and this little instrumental is a great piece for reflection and relaxing…

“Enterchange” (track 6): “are you tired of being lied to that’s all we’re asking…” man, Mars Ill just keeps putting out great music to listen to… unfortunately, you have to search for Mars III instead of Ill because someone didn’t do their homework… anyway… enterchange is a strong tune to bang, and that’s what it is i do…

“Follow Through” (track 7): Gavin DeGraw… seriously, what is it about Gavin that attracts such a diverse audience, i mean he’s got the girls and the guys, artsy folks and the pop audiences… i’ll tell you what i like… the soul that oozes through his vocals… that makes the album click for me… follow through is a slick track too…

“For Regulars Only” (track 8): Dexter Gordon is one of my favorite sax players… though this track is a lot heavier on trumpet than sax, the solos are spectacular…

“Forgiven” (track 9): i really like this album more and more everytime i listen to it… the vocals on this track are near haunting… very reminiscent of Dizzy by the Ours…

“Freddie Freeloader” (track 10): as i was looking through this playlist i was starting to wonder if maybe it was too heavy on jazz… but hey, it’s Miles… and on iTunes… wow, 99 cents for just under ten minutes… you can’t beat that…

“He Woke Me Up Again” (not in iTunes): it’s too bad that this album isn’t in iTunes, but it’s still very much worth mentioning… i love the rhtythmic imbalance throughout this track… it creates such a tension… ok… i’m getting too much into it… CHECK OUT SUFJAN STEVENS…

“I Know Too Much About Him” (track 11): one of the songs i had to misspell in order to find it in iTunes… anyway… it’s Smokie Norful… and i’m suddenly a big Smokie Norful fan…the guy has a great voice… and it’s a beautiful song

“Insult Like the Truth” (track 12): i really enjoyed this tribute to Charlie Peacock and though at first i was put off a little by his vocals, they’ve grown on me quite a bit… this has such a crazy rhythm and odd instrumentation to it… you just gotta love it…

“Into What You Say” (track 13): this beat so gets stuck in my head at least three times a week whether i listen to the song or not… i was actually listening to this album earlier today too… whether i agree with Mason or not… he does have talent…

“It Won’t Last” (track 14): Braille Brizzy with one of the better hip hop entries from last year… this track is amazing just in that you have Othello, Braille and Pigeon John all blasting through… just an amazing bit of work on this one…

“Jungle Trail” (track 15): i saw Stephen in concert as a total surprise last year… he opened for Jars of Clay and the people that gave me the ticket didn’t have a clue as to who he was… but they do now… and this is a touching example of his acoustic prowess… not too many people can hold the rhythm as well as he can… and i love the tease (uninentional or not) of the theme song to The Greatest American Hero…

“Lady Luck (Do What I Do)” (track 16): This is one of the dopest beats i’ve heard in a long time… i somewhat skimmed over it when i was reviewing this album last year… then i got the Livin It DVD with skateboarding and BMX tricks… and i was just blown away by this beat… it helped of course that the guy performing during it was amazing too… but for real… don’t sleep on this beat…

“Let It All Out” (track 17): well this track is even beter when preceeded by the outro to Which to Bury…?, but it’s easily on my short list of great songs from last year… Relient K blew me away with this album and this song is a beautiful centerpiece for it…

“Lord (I Don’t Know)” (track 18): i’ve always thought Thrive was an underrated album… this song is a brilliant little worship number, before the ‘boys went off into the land of worship albums… i guess it speaks to me more since i struggle with control a lot… but man… what a powerful lyric…

“Love” (track 19): Cool sassy little beat with a tremendous funk backbone… macho and elsie hold it down nicely on this track from their concept album…

“Lyin” (not in iTunes): first entry from this year… Gentle Revolution is a very solid album and i love how he just lays everything out here for us as listeners… great pop tune with honest lyrics… clap… clap… clap clap…

“Medication” (not in iTunes): talk about weird… Derek Webb has an acoustic set available exclusively through iTunes… but his albums aren’t available… anyway… again with some heart piercing lyrics and a nice bit of musical experimentation… very meloncholy and inrospective…

“Microphone Fiend” (track 20): ha… what can i say… classic Rakim… it doesn’t get much better… my version is actually from the greatest hits issued with The 18th Letter… good stuff though in e-f-f-e-c-t…

“Only Alive” (track 21): i think Jars of Clay deserves far more attention than they get… this album is one of the better albums out there… this is a nice smooth quiet tune that is very fun to listen and sing along to…

“Originalz” (track 22): pigeon john and mikah 9… whew… pure heat… keep up if you can… this is such a hot track… solid solid track…

“Plan B” (track 23): i’m gonna see mute math in concert soon… anyway… this is a cool tune tha displays some of the coolness that makes the group so special… can’t wait for a full length album…

“Quit My Job” (track 24): heh… i played this song for my boss once… he didn’t get it… i think it’s a really cool track… Monkey Business is another fine effort from ill Harmonics…

“Sleepless Night” (not in iTunes): i never got into Fernando before… he was always too boring for my tases… now that i’ve listened and been adoring his self titled effort i’m wondering if i was his fault or mine… i also had a sleepless night the other night…

“Table for Two” (track 25): One of my favorite releases from Caedmon’s Call… actually, my favorite song from that era was on a bonus ep and was called “The Rich Song” but i can’t listen to that much… it’s a tear-jerker… anyway… great litle tune here and as (nearly) always… solid lyrics…

    “Take Five” (track 26): easy… a classic staple of piano-based jazz… Brubeck was brilliant…

“Take This Life” (track 27): HA! i bet you thought this would be Jeremy Camp… for shame… this is one of the better songs on a really cool album… i actually got the live CD recently too and it’s pretty good too… but this song is a great prayer… and the piano touches are very nice…

“The Symphony of Blase” (track 28): so this one was out of order because of “the”… whatever… i just really like the vocals of this track and the lyrics are pretty neat… “are there no shadows where you are?”… how can you not want to keep listening…

“To Be Honest” (track 29): all this recent talk about Shaun made me start thinking about listening to his albums again… many people faulted him for this release because it’s too, i don’t know, dirty i guess production wise… but i think that it’s a really sweet piece of music… very endearing track in particular…

“Want For Nada” (not in iTunes): well, i didn’t really expect the Brainwash Projects to be on here… but it’s still a nice song and definitely worth mentioning… oh, hey, three songs with pigeon john on them… how about that… i guess i’m a fan…

“Ways of the Wind” (not in iTunes): this song is an anomaly as the album is in iTunes but this song is one of four that has been trimmed from the listing… beats me, but it’s one of the quirkiest hip hop songs i’ve ever encountered… very cool track…

“What You Want” (track 30): had to put some 4h Ave up on here… and this beat is just plain dope… props to Maj for his cuts… very well done…

“Words That You Say” (track 31): again, an issue with “the”… but Somehing Like Silas raised the bar on modern worship with their release… proving that yes, it’s okay to be creative when you’re worshiping God… this song stuck out because i am often drawn to songs asking God to speak to us…

“World Keeps on Spinning” (track 32): it seems i’m one of the only folks that really bought into Taylor Sorensen’s music… i really enjoy it a lot… i think it’s very soothing and dramatic in tone and content… the world keeps spinning no matter how devestating the events of the day…

“You Didn’t Know Me When” (track 33): harry connick jr… one of my first entry points into vocal jazz… you didn’t know me when i was a little kid with very little musical knowledge… ah well… good times…

so that’s done… it will be over at the TRu soon enough… for now though, consider yourself part of an inner circle of friends who are getting a sneak peak… and, by the way, they will definitely never be this long again… took way too long…

    listening…

what a night… if you’re reading this and you had some sort of problems that you were dealing with last night… know that i probably was praying for you… more on that later… first, my review update ~850/~1600 words down… that’s the good news… i should be done in an hour or so… the bad news is that getting them posted is certain to be a challenge all of its own… it’s gonna take a lot of finangling and the folks that normally are capable of that are busy with GMA week… ah well… such is life… so real quick breakdown of last night and why i don’t have more words written…

    TIRE-d

i got home around six o’clock last night which was better than my 6:30 arrival Monday night, but waiting for me yesterday was a flat tire on my wife’s car… so, in the limited confines of my garage, i was able to pop off the bolt covers and the wheel covers, then the five bolts, then jack up the car (thanks to kraM, i know to pop the bolts first)… get the tire off, get a donut on, bolt them, drop the car off the jack, get cleaned up, eat half of my dinner and head over to the tire place that had assured me earlier that they could patch the tire and install it in a twenty minute process that would cost about thirty bucks… hmmm…

so i got to the tire place a little before seven and the guy tried to turn me away… (in hindsight, i should’ve let him)… but since we had been promised over the phone that it would be done today, he told me that they would honor that guarantee… although, it wouldn’t be twenty minutes (i guess they don’t care about that guarantee)… so, i dropped off the key and set off on foot towards the Super Target not too far off from the tire place, stopping first at a new Starbucks for a white chocolate mocha to soothe the pains of having a two hour wait… would that i had thought to bring my laptop, i would’ve been able to get some work done… however, as i walked around Target killing time and sipping my caffiene fix, which disappeared way too quickly, i pondered life’s mysteries and other things you do on little sleep when you are trying not to be upset at your current circumstances… well, in less than an hour, all of Target’s allure had worn completely off, and i was forced to buy another cup of caffinated confection, this time a caramel macchiato, at, believe it or not, an entirely different Starbucks… and i sat on a bench and stared at the sky for ten minutes or so wondering what on Earth God had in mind for this evening… after i came to no conclusion, i headed over to a nearby grocery store and browsed the soda aisle… i know, big fun… by the way, i do have in my possession a bottle of Aruba Jam Sprite Remix just waiting to be cracked open and tasted… anyway, nothing eventful came of the soda aisle, though i did get a phone call and was able to pass some time in discussion as i milled about and loitered… then i headed over to Blockbuster and browsed the previously viewed movies as they are currently advertising the special of buy two get one free… however, i’m on a buying freeze right now with my birthday coming up and DVDs being a pretty common present… so i walked out empty handed when finally, i get a call from the tire place… it is now 8:40 and they’ve assessed the damage… and they’re telling me that the tire is irreparable… wonderful… what’s more, they don’t have the tire in sock to replace it, even if i decided to let them… my options are apparently to let them keep the car overnight and transport it to one of their associates to replace the tire or never see my car again… something like that… so i tell them to just give me the car back, that i would take it elsewhere tomorrow… well, apparently that’s okay, but it will be a 15-20 minute wait, because they somehow needed to hoist my car up on the lift, remove the donut, and busy themselves elsewhere before they could figure out that the flatt tire in the trunk was irreparable… NONSENSE!.. so i finally got home a little after nine…

    — to conclude this topic, my wife went to another tire place who also didn’t have the right tire in stock, but offered to special order them, which would take 3-10 days… and i spoke with a tire expert who told me that it was a discontinued tire and that i was out of luck… after badgering him about how ridiculous it was to think that there are no tires in the entire (get it? “en-tire”) world that would work for my car, he did offer some alternatives… jeesh man, it’s not like i’m trying to, i don’t know, GIVE YOU MY BUSINESS or anything… anyway, we got it worked out… but it was $230+ instead of $30… and it took about 4 hours instead of twenty minutes…—

oh, but my night was far from done… i got home a little after nine, finished my dinner, watched about an hour of television which included one recorded performance from American Idol (the chick with the fro and the Tina Turner dress)… and eventually headed to bed… until…

1:30 AM… blood-thirsty screaming coming from down the hall… daddy pounces out of bed (i’m part puma) and scampers down the hall, stubbing his toe on the door as he goes through it… little boy is awake and upset… apparently not feeling too well… as soon as i pick him up, he begins coughing and acting as if he was about to vomit all over me… i brace for impact, but fortunately it never comes… i search the room for signs of previous such activities but find that it’s clear… he feels warm, but it could be that i’m chilly… i lay him down and soothe him into going back to sleep… this process takes about twenty minutes… daddy heads back to bed…

2:45 AM… angry screams and crying coming from the room next door… littler boy is upset and is inconsolable by daddy… though, daddy pounces into action again to retrieve him from his crib and bring him to his food source… daddy tries to go back to sleep, pretending that the little feet kicking him in the head are actually thumps from a relaxing massage…

3:26 AM… blood-curdling screams from down the hall… daddy pounces into action again with a little less fervor… little boy is awake and upset again… wants daddy to console him… is that a fever or am i dreaming?… daddy performs the necessary room sweep to make sure nothing has been contaminated and again tucks little boy back into bed and convinces him to go back to sleep… the process takes twenty-five minutes… daddy returns to bed…

4:31 AM… yeah… the screaming returns… daddy strolls down the hall to comfort little boy and, without a sweep, places him back into bed and begins the back-to-sleep routine… twenty minutes go by… little boy is still awake, but daddy goes back to bed…

5:18 AM… daddy pretends that it’s a dream… well until he realizes that it could potentially wake up littler boy making matters worse… and daddy stumbles down the hallway… daddy determines that it is in fact a fever and applies the appropriate medicinal dosage… and heads back to bed…

    8:13 AM… daddy is late for work… GAH!…

so that was the night… but that’s not the whole story… as i headed back to bed after the first alarm… guess what pops into my head?… “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” … so i’m laying there like… are you SERIOUS? it’s two o’clock in the morning… i had a rough day… i’m tired… i’m still getting over this cold… (silly me to think that God wouldn’t give me the strength and restoration to do what He asks me to do)… be that as it may, i’ve learned to “humor” God in circumstances such as these… and i spent a good half hour or so praying… i had no idea what i was supposed to be praying for… i had no idea what words to say… i just prayed… and then, satisfied with my efforts, i went back to sleep… each time after, during the night… i kept hearing the prompting… so i spent a lot of the night praying for whoever you are out there and whatever help you needed… such is life… sleep is overrated anyway…

    i hear your voice….

    Kendall Payne – Grown
The Kry – God of Infinite Worth
The OC Supertones – Faith Like a Child

    i see your face…

almost eleven thirty and i have finally begun the reviews… actually 100 words out of approximately 1600… fun… in my defense, i got two of the albums for this week just on Saturday night… anyway… here’s last week’s reviews… while you wait…

    CMCentral
