“I don’t think any church has ever been relevant to culture, to the human struggle, unless it believed in Jesus and the power of His gospel. If the supposed new [postmodern] church believes in trendy music and cool web pages, then it is not relevant to culture either. It is just another tool of Satan to get people to be passionate about nothing.” – Donald Miller from Blue Like Jazz

so for breakfast this morning i have fruit salad… and i’m eating it with a flimsy plastic fork… i must say that it’s quite difficult to pierce the skin of a fresh grape when it’s slippery and the fork fingers are trying to embrace it or push it away… we all know that the fork needs to get up under the skin to be of any use… after several unsuccessful attempts, i often just pluck the grape up out of the bowl and swallow it whole…

“… Life is full contact/ quitting ain’t an option/ I’m spittin in the wind/ pullin hero capes right off them/ some just wanna run the ball/ i’m satisfied with blocking/ success isn’t fame, it’s completion your calling…” – Sintax from Down But Never Out on Sivion’s Mood Enhancement

i pass a church everyday on my way to work and for the last (at least) eight months they’ve been advertising and apparently going through “40 Days of Purpose”… besides my initial misgivings, one just has to wonder when and if this church will ever decide and/or realize that, “hey, maybe it’s time to move on”… seriously, you could’ve done the book 6 times over eight months… i’m starting to wonder how much truth there really is to this satirical article

to me… all four of these seperate thoughts are connected…

so, happy Tuesday, i have a headache right now and i’m trying to decide whether the remedy is advil cold and sinus, excedrin, or more coffe coupled with staunch bravado… funny how bravery and foolishness go hand in hand… i also began reading Blue Like Jazz and can’t bring myself to quit… in fact, i’ve read about 75% of the 240 pages and i’ve only had it since saturday… the last time i read a book with such ferocity… well, i don’t remember the last time… i’m more of a marathon reader these days… but this has inspired me to sprint… in other news… i’ve mastered the art of invisibility… i think… well, see, i just walked into a conference room where two coworkers were convening behind their laptops… and i was able to enter the room, unplug my laptop, grab my coffee, and juice and walk out without any reaction whatsoever… seriously, neither of them even looked up from the dull din of their screens… although, now that i think about it, if i were invisible, they probably would’ve reacted to the floating laptop and coffee and juice… so then maybe i’m not invisible at all, but rather inconsequential… that’s a little less exciting i guess… well, i need to get crackin on some reviews… back later…

so, i thought this might be interesting for somebody… perhaps just me… but what follows is a behind the scenes type look at what goes in to writing my weekly reviews for CMCentral.com… this is a look at the final phase of the reviews… normally by the time i get to this point i’ve already listened to the albums about 8-9 times each and have a decent idea of what the infamous introductory paragraphs will be about… or at least what CDs i’ll be reviewing… this week was a little different however… anyway… let me know if you found it interesting or not… what you liked, didn’t like… whatever…

good morning… it’s early and i haven’t officially started the reviews yet… well, i guess that means early is relative, since i would like to get into a better rhythm that would allow me to be done with the week’s reviews by this time… anyway… yesterday i decided to pull a switcheroo and swap out one of the abums i was going to review this week with one that i got on Monday… which meant that yesterday, i was largely absorbed in that CD (in between meetings and what not)… today, this very morning i’ve decided to switch out another one and work on a different album as well… so, if you’re keeping score… one album i’ve had since Monday, one album i’ve had since Saturday, one album i’ve had for a while and hadn’t listened to it until last week sometime… and this one i switched for this morning i’ve had for a while and listened to a few times, but never critically… should be fun… i love a challenge…

a little later… so i actually started writing a bit… i’ve really had no clear ideas up to this point… on the car ride in this morning, i was tossing around some thoughts… but nothing too specific emerged… a fire truck just raced by… i wonder what the day will bring… current count 112/~1600… moving on…

later still… there should never be a line to use the men’s restroom… NEVER… it’s unnatural… besides… guys should never be so anxious to jump on the hot seat as soon as it’s been vacated… anyway… i’ve allowed myself to fall victim to distraction… so, even though the roosevelts are screaming up my audioscrobbler charts and time is moving on… i sit here stumped, trying to think of the perfect opening lines for three of the reviews… i’d like to think that once the levee breaks… oh, see, i got myself distracted again… no change on the count…

about thirty minutes later… that was pretty productive… though i’m off course again… for a bit there i was on the roller coaster of words… i wanted to use “you can take a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink” for one of the intros but it didn’t work out… three of the intros are written and the fourth one is formulating in my head… “formulate a plan/ intelligent man like hannibal/ phenominal hooks/ cunning instincts like an animal/ i’m gunning you crooks/ stunning you rooks yelling avenue/ i been off the books/ this year i’m off the planets…” okay… time to focus again… 419/~1600…

ten more minutes…watch the first step, it’s a doozie… after my brief 4th Avenue Jones side trip (those lyrics are from “No Plan B“)… fingers reacquainted themselves with keys and the result was splendiferous… 539/~1600… four intros done… now to swoop in and gut the albums…

after a long stretch of inactivity…i totally tuned out, ate lunch wandered around the web, did some work, little of this little of that… now i’m buckled back in and i’m scraping together words for this one review… man… some albums are just tough to write about… i could really sum it up in maybe two or three sentences… but i strive for better than that… must… write… more… 719/~1600…

fighting distractions… so one down… three more to go… at this time i’d like to extend a great hearty thank you to Josh for being the devil on the other side of the internet and distracting me with Mae and their eCard games… (http://www.theeverglow.com)… you scoundrel… time to buckle down… 760/~1600…

running behind… surprise… but hey, the last half hour has been pretty productive… and hey… 1289/~1600… now the trick is to finish it off in a negative amount of time… hmmm…

overdue… but done… so, finished up, the last review came together nicely i think, but not in the appropriate order… i had to spend longer than i hoped reading, rereading, shifting sentences and words around, reading, rereading… you get the idea… but i think it worked out well… bottom line, 1615/~1600… email sent… out of my hands…

and now… i get ready for a number of other reviews and features and oh yeah, life…

    Pepe’s Last Day

before i get started… yes, i did name my car… and i’m okay with any amounts of harrassment you may heap upon me for that… okay… let’s begin… today is the very last day i’ll be able to gaze out my office window onto my car of seven years, Pepe La’vroom… Named after everyone’s favorite cartoon skunk, Pepe has served me pretty well over the years… first car i bought entirely with my own money… had the five year loan paid off in two and a half years… and have enjoyed no payments for the last four and a half years… but alas, his time has come… he’s been called to the mission field and tonight, i’ll be picking up a Dodge Durango to replace him in our automotive arsenal… basically what this means is that i’m going to be driving a grand am around from now on instead of a protege… i’m not too keen on the bigger car aspect, but i’ll get sed to it i hope… for now though, i need to come to grips with sending off Pepe with some old guy who’s flying in next Friday who says that he’s from the Macedonian Call Foundation… they basically keep cars on hand so that missionaries have transportation when they return to the states on furlough… so, that’s where Pepe is headed and i think he’ll serve them well too… i’ll miss him though… lots of memories…

somewhat related to this whole process… and even to the last entry… ever since the Durango was introduced to the world, i wanted one… it was kind of silly, and i never totally expected to get one, but compared to all the other SUVs, it seemed way cooler… and i wanted an SUV because i fell prey to the whole bigger is better scandal i guess… anyway… i shelved that “dream” long ago… and now with talks of getting an SUV, they kind of cropped back up but not really… i mean, we were looking at new models and the new Durango is, i’m sorry if you like it, wussy-looking… i mean, the grill, the shape… it’s a glorified minivan… anyway… i had started to get into the idea of an Envoy or something similar, maybe even a hybrid highlander… but i really wasn’t looking forward to picking up a new car payment… (we’ve owned both the cars for over a year now)… so right as we resolved to hold off and save up ’til the end of the year, a friend of ours decided to sell their 98 Durango… and it’s such a reasonable price that we can buy it without financing… so again… God saw fit to grant me the dream of owning a Durango, silly as it was… it’s not perfect, but it’s a really good move for us… and it’s certainly an answer to prayer…

on to new things… i meant to welcome my newest subscriber yesterday, you know who you are i think… but i’m glad that you felt compelled enough to subscribe… this also means that i’ll be reading your xanga regularly now… and note to all my readers out there… i’ve made it a practice to keep up with and attempt to comment on the blogs of those who subscribe… simply put, i don’t have all that much time in the day, but i feel that it’s only fair that i keep up with your entries as well… so, moral of the story… subscribe if you want me to read your blog regularly… and comment inconsistently… i do read others, but it’s much less frequent… (note: i also lost a subscriber yesterday, so the balance of the world is still safe)… anyway…

i signed up for audioscrobbler today after weeks of waiting for the sign up funtion to be active again… and there for if you ever want to know what i’m listening to, just check out my page there, http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/theTRu… that will give you a pretty accurate picture i guess…

so, i’m a little frustrated about CD servicing… yes there is that one big label that ignores me altogether, and that’s irritating… but even the labels that do send me albums… it’s becoming more and more common that i get them at the last minute… for instance, there’s a big release coming up next week and i still have no idea what the album sounds like… i know that there are copies in circulation… and that they’ve been out for quite a while… but i’m still out in the dark… makes it difficult to be consistent with my reviews… i mean… goodness… i got one album for last week on Monday!… that gives me like a day to listen to it enough to get a good grasp of it and then turn around and write coherantly about it… silly deadlines… i guess i can’t complain too much, since i get the albums free and clear, but it’s still nice to have a little breathing room… someday i won’t be under the gun…

well… now i’m gonna head off for the weekend… i have some things to attend to… things to write… people to see… a truck to buy… (gonna go see a man about a horse, well more like 230 some horses)… enjoy the weekend…

If your father’s getting naked in the pup, walk in backwards and cover him up…” – Half-Handed Cloud

yeah, pretty random… i got this CD from the label yesterday and it’s interesting and quite random… anyway… back to your regularly scheduled update…

so i got my reviews done finally yesterday… once i really focused on it, i went on a tear… knocked out about a thousand words in less than an hour and a half… yeah i think that’s pretty good… but before i get too far ahead of myself… let’s talk about what i wanted to talk about a week ago… man time is crazy…

some of you know that my day job is entrenched in the information technology sector of business… i work with databases and blips and code bases and all kinds of boring stuff that i never in my life dreamed would make sense to me… so, coupled with my writing, i suppose i’m one of those people who exercise both side of their brain equally… though, honestly as i look around my office space at work, i can’t help but wonder, why i am where i am… i mean seriously, do i even belong in the technical industry?… when i first started it was a challenge… it was a good move career-wise and for my family… better hours, better pay, better feeling at the end of the day… that kind of thing… but now, i don’t know, maybe the luster has worn off… maybe it’s just boring… maybe it’s just this particular job… maybe it’s me… i mean, there’s plenty of good aspects to the job… but i often find myself realizing that i don’t really fit the scenery… i’m not really into all the gadgetry, i don’t get excited about new patches or code functionality, i really don’t have much to talk about with most of my co-workers… and besides that, it’s kind of a stand off whenever i do converse with them… most of them don’t particularly like me or think i’m worth talking to, and well, i have my own reservations too…

Anyway… besides not fitting in, i often wonder if the work i do, limits my ability to write… i mean, i never have time, i’m always drained, i don’t know… maybe i wouldn’t write any more if i didn’t have to work, maybe i would be a lot better… does the grass look greener over there or what?… but then in the same breath i can question what i do write… i mean, i started reviewing CDs strictly to train myself to write more consistently and better… when i started, i even joked that one day i’d write for CMCentral, since at the time, it was the brass ring on the carousel of CCM… and i was terrible back then… and nobody expected Robin to leave… and nobody expected that i would really have a shot… that was four years ago, and now, i’m a better reviewer… i’m a better writer to some extent… the thing is… i used to write a lot of poetry and other stuff… now it seems all i take the time to write is reviews or music related features… and i sometimes wonder why… i wonder why i can’t sit down and write a poem like i used to be able to do… i wonder… have i lost touch with life… i wonder if i belong where i am…

and so it is, that when i come across one of the numerous songs that pose that very question, or rather, make that very statement… “I don’t belong here”… i’ll get a bit lost in thought… and this is what i’ve come to as somewhat of a conclusion… of course i belong here… God put me here.. what’s distressing about the songs is that generally they speak of “here” as Earth… and talk about how we were made for Heaven and we don’t belong here on earth… that to me is just plain absurd… i know where that line of thinking comes from… and true enough, we were made as eternal beings… but to sit in idle all our lives because, we’re certain belong somewhere else undermines God’s omniscience… think about it… God orchestrates EVERYTHING that goes on in life… are we so vain to think that what we see as mundane routine doesn’t serve His purposes?… are we so selfish that we’d rather sit on our hands and wait for the bus to take us where we do belong rather than trying to find a way to serve Him and His will… i don’t know… my head is kind of clogged up right now… but duh, OF COURSE we belong here… OF COURSE i belong right here… now that doesn’t mean that we are supposed to not try to advance in our careers and what not because we’re where God put us… that’s the other extreme and maybe content for another discussion…

so anyway… Star Wars is out… there’s a few people i know already that have seen it… i’m trying to make my plans and figure out the best way to go see it in the theaters… certainly won’t be this week as i need to let all the kooky folks have their fill of it first… that’s right, kooky… you there in the chewbaca costume… you’re a kook… and you with the lightsaber…. you’re imbalanced… it’s a movie… calm down… anyway… i want to see it in the theater, because it’s one of those few movies that actually warrants a gigantic screen and speakers that would otherwise leave you deaf… plus, i recently went through the whole series and watched my DVDs… i must say that the next step for the series is to reshoot episodes 4-6 with real actors… i mean good actors… i mean… yeah… anyway…

oh, so i mentioned my reviews… here they are…

so, i realize that i’m not as popular as some folks… and that’s okay… but i thought that the littles would generate much more enthusiasm than that… they’re spectacular!… anyway… gas prices dropped 8 cents between Monday morning and Monday evening… i filled up my tank Monday morning… GAH!… oh, here’s something fun… since you all seem to miss my coworkers… here’s a brief conversation i had at work recently…

they: woah, is that Halloween candy?
    me: indeed
they: wow, how old is that?
    me: um, Halloween.
they: oh, yeah, i guess that makes sense
    me: indeed

speaking of coworkers… i haven’t yet received the free iPod mini that i won back on the 20th of April… i guess i should know better to expect speedy service from a Christian organization… oh that reminds me… alright, later, let’s finish this story first… ok… so the reason the pending iPod mini relates to coworkers is that one of my coworkers wants to buy this iPod from me when it arrives… originally, i thought… hey, great! easy sale, no hassles… then a price was named… $50… breaking my stunned silence, i replied: what are you smoking?… i was able to “talk him up” to $100 offer, but looking at eBay, there’s a number of new iPod minis going for close to the $200 ticket price… so, it looks like i’ll be going that route after all… if it ever comes…

okay, so i’m on a roll… really hope they haven’t found this blog yet… (*insert deliberate eye roll here*)… the other day as i was coming in to work with my computer bag, lunch bag, a bag of CDs and my coffee mug, i looked up the hallway and ahead of me and there was a coworker… about 15-30 seconds ahead of me, opening the door to the officespace… cool, i thought to myself, i don’t have to shift everything around and free up a hand to punch in the security code and open the door… WRONG!… the door was opened, we MADE EYE CONTACT as he slipped through the entrance, pulling the door shut behind him… so i reach the door and have to shift my bags and coffee, punch in the code and open the door on my own… dirty hooker… i felt like… ok, never mind, no good can come of that…

uno mas? okay… i do have another actually… so another coworker that i rarely interact with these days (we’re in different departments nowadays) IMs me out of the blue with a link to some comedy blog entry that is detailing a hamburger adventure… basically, the author thought perhaps it would be funny to go to a “build your own burger” place and ask for every possible topping, including extra meat… i don’t know… it was a minimally interesting article… what i was more intrigued about was the reasoning behind the IM… so i felt it out a bit… after determining that it was entirely random, i decided to up the ante… knowing that this coworker has gone through seminary, i asked for a spiritual parallel… unfortunately, he skirted the whole issue and refused me my satisfaction… chicken… anyway… i haven’t gotten any IMs from him since, but i have gotten a strange look or two… but that’s not new…

alright… enough of *that*… how about something you all like to pick on?… like, my reviews…

okay, back to my side track story… as many of you know, the Interntional Bible Society, in conjunction with Zondervan Publishing, recently issued a new translation of the Bible… many of you know this because you’re either boycotting Zondervan because of this, shaking your head at the boycotters, or you’ve seen the fruits of a million dollar marketing campaign… anyway, the TNIV (Today’s New International Version) may have struck a controversial chord with many folks because of it’s content, but for me, it’s something entirely different that got my dander up… (NOTE: before you boycott me – i may also take issue with the translation itself, but i haven’t spent enough time with it yet, and it’s not pertinent to this story)…

the IBS was offering free copies of the TNIV on one of their websites (i can’t find it now) and since i was curious about some of the curious changes they made to the text and since it was free, i requested a copy… now, i realize that beggars can’t be choosers and all that good stuff… but it took about a month for me to have the free copy of the Bible in my hands… and several times during that month, i had entirely forgotten about ordering it… by means of comparison, when i requested a free copy of the book of mormon, it arrived in maybe two days… i also received follow up materials… so much so that i eventually had to request that i be removed from their list…

my point is this… if we are so serious about sharing our faith, about getting the Bible into people’s hands, “to meet the ever-growing spiritual needs of today’s generation of believers—as well as to help nourish the next generation of believers” (from TNIV.info)… don’t you think it’s important to provide good customer service… don’t you think it’s important, not only to get the Bible into their hands, but make sure that they understand it and have a chance to act on it and grow?… for instance, i still haven’t really opened up my copy of the TNIV… i have glanced through the pdf version i downloaded, but i haven’t had time to dig into the new translation… but, the IBS doesn’t seem to care… as far as they’re concerned, their job is done… the only follow-up material i received was a catalog in case i wanted to buy more from them… “…While some just fake, i wanna make my faith Christ-like…” – Sintax.the.terrific

okay… i think i’ve taken more than my share of your time today… if not, here’s a few random comments to help clean up my notes… Josh and i were talking about interviews the other day… and we both decided that i should do more interviews than i currently do… actually, any would work… however, neither of us could figure out where the time would come from… who do you think i should interview?

there needs to be a way to prevent hard boiled eggs from sticking to their shells… i’m sick of peeling an egg and ripping off pieces of perfectly good egg white… the new DJ Maj album is going to feature Special Ed… i know that doesn’t mean much to most of you, but it’s cool… also cool about the next DJ Maj CD is that it comes out the same day as Pro*Pain and the new Paul Wright… start saving up…

    general09 May 2005 04:21 pm

so, i’m kind of back… i don’t have too much time… i’ll admit, i was sucked into another pointless argument surrounding a poorly-articulated piece about music… i honestly don’t know why i do it… anyway… enough of that nonsense… let’s see how much i can get typed out here…

we were talking about Proverbs 20:5 in sunday school last week… (yesterday’s study complemented the discussion)… for those who don’t feel like looking it up, the NIV says it like this…

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.”

so our discussion centered around what our heart’s purposes meant, why they were deep waters, and how to draw them out… we reasoned that God has placed inside each of our hearts one purpose that He will bring to fruition if we faithfully seek His will… ie. Phillipians 1:6 “…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…“… we then concluded that they were deep waters because it shouldn’t be easy to accomplish… or that sin has prevented it from being a simple process… i kind of got the picture of climbing up the giant mountain just to find the old man at the top who has the answers i seek… you know that illustration… so i was thinking about what’s in my own heart and how it got there… see, the purposes of your heart are things that you desire far more than anything else… and like it says in Colossians “set your hearts on things above” we have some input in the content of our hearts… which could also make the purposes that God has placed their upon our creation get pushed farther to the bottom… deeper down inside… so it’s work to get to God’s purposes for us, which, by the way are the only purposes that will really allow us to live fulfilling lives… and you need understanding to figure out how to draw them out… especially with all the other desires we put in there… so i got another picture in my head…

imagine going out onto the ocean with the intention of fishing… deep sea fishing… and see, there’s a reason that you go out so far into the ocean… that’s where the big fish are… so, here you are in your boat and you have yourself a fishing pole… and if you cast your line into the water so that it goes a couple feet down, what are your chances of catching a fish?… well, you do stand a chance of catching a fish, but it might be like a small little (i don’t know much about fish) sunfish maybe?… i don’t remember, i think that’s what they’re called… i remember fishing once and you could see them from the surface and since i was young i thought it was great, i could just put my line in and sure enough caught one!… bam bam bam…. it was really simple and eventually i got a talking to from my dad ’cause he was sick of releasing them all… so i had to cast my line a little deeper… it’s tougher to catch fish the deeper you go, but if you do catch them, the deeper you go, the bigger the fish, generally… and i might be making it up, but that’s how i imagine it from my limited fishing experience… so if you want the big fish, you need a really stong rod and reel, and you need to drop it deep in the ocean… so i think it’s like that with the purposes of our heart… understanding helps us realize that the purposes that are swarming around the surface are probably going to be catch and release desires… understanding teaches us that we need to go deeper… understanding strengthens our rod and reel so that when we do hook one of the big ones, we are prepared to reel it in and effectively utilize it…

so what’s in your heart right now… how deep are you digging?… are you readying yourself for what God has for you?

so, i’m not totally sure why i felt the need to write that out, but i did… it probably could’ve made more sense… but i think it gets the point across somewhat… anyway… i have a busy week scheduled… i love a challenge and i’m hoping to write an unprecedented number of reviews this week… the first one’s already up and it’s a doozie… early Deepspace5 Review at Renown Magazine… so there will be four for CMCentral going up sometime tomorrow hopefully as well as a number of reviews elsewhere… and then next week… something really special at the TRu… for now, i’m gonna blow my nose (allergies) and then blow this joint… check out my wheel-boys below… littler boy says “keep your eyes on the road, big brother!”… ha… i love those guys…
