ARE YOU READY TO ROCK????

i am ready to ride – i ain’t ready to fall… but you don’t get it… (“Spitting in the Wind” – The Showdown)

Man, i’m reverting back to my rock roots i suppose… first Norma Jean, now The Showdown… and Maylene is right around the corner… boy, i’m fixin to stage dive or something…

THE WORSHIP ROCKSTAR OFF STAGE

Here are two conversations that i recently had which are related but took place at least two weeks apart…

So they’re going to join our small group.
Looks that way
You don’t seem happy
Promise me you won’t tell them that i write music reviews.
Why?
He sings onstage at church
So.
So, the first thing they’ll ask is what i think of his singing.
No they won’t.
Sure they will, then they’ll ask for a “hook-up”
you’re crazy

[to them] barrY writes about music
[to me] you know I had to tell them
(mild chuckling)
Oh really?
yep, i do…
yeah, he writes for a big website and he even writes articles for a big magazine.
cool. So what do you think about [his] singing?
(mild chuckling)
ha ha, really though, that’s cool we should talk, maybe we can set something up and you can use your connections and get us on the inside track. . .
interesting thought.

people are so predictable… sometimes it’s sad…

AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Hey here’s something cool… inReview.net, the site formerly known as cMusicWeb, has been running a pretty interesting series called Most Spun 2006… basically, they solicited several artists, writers and industry-type folks and asked which five albums they listened to the most last year… included in the mix are Doug Van Pelt, Robin Parrish, Bebo Norman, Andrew Osenga and more… oh, and, yeah, i did manage to get my list included as well… but, i kid you not, i thought the series was cool even before my list was a part of it… now, check that out, give them lots of traffic and make them believe it was worth including little ole me…

okay… back to the grind… thank you for my intermission…

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???

For the record, i haven’t yet seen the games from yesterday, but i have them on my DVR and i’m planning to enjoy them soon… This weekend disappeared from me rather quickly as i spent the time organizing my CDs at home and tying to get them all catalogued on my computer for better accessibility… i managed to get through about 600 of them… quite a few boxes to go and then there’s the six boxes here at work to deal with… nope, i’m not complaining at all… i’m quite fortunate, i know…

I’M DREAMING OF A WHITE DRIVEWAY

When i wasn’t digging through the crates of albums, i was outside shovelling and playing in the snow with the littles… that’s right, snow!… and even though it was only about 2 inches or so, we made the most of it… got the shovels out and the three of us were “digging” up the driveway… when all was said and done i shovelled the driveway at least three times thanks to the littles following behind me taking shovels full of snow and replacing the missing snow… those boys… i got them back though when we took a sled ride around the house and i dumped them both into the snow…

NOW KIDS PAY ATTENTION TODAY’S LESSON IS…

We also dodged a bullet yesterday in regards to the leadership of our Sunday School class… the teacher/leader who had been in charge of our class had moved back in September… we’d been doing that Love and Respect thing for a while and more recently, we were searching for a permanent teacher… and we got to the ultimate low this week… if it weren’t for some fast talking and reasoning, it might have gotten so bad that i would’ve volunteered to lead the class… and since you don’t know me in person, you may not think that’s such a bad thing, but even if i do have interesting things to talk about once in a while, public speaking is not my forte and a lot of it probably would get me into even more trouble with my church than i’m already in…

WHAT THE &*&(*& DO WE (K)NOW?

Also noteworthy was the occassional and recurring throbbing of a cracked temporary crown courtesy of my local agent of Lucifer… yeah, i survived and i was numb for most of the treatment this time, but dude cracked the crown and just shoved it back into place and now, the nerve is still getting shots of air thanks to its new window… great… most of the time it’s fine, but last night i woke up several times and couldn’t get back to sleep… naturally, as i lay there in bed not sleeping i decided to ponder Quantum Physics… i know i’m strange, but to be fair, i watched What the Bleep Do We Know? not too long ago and it got me thinking… okay, i suppose that doesn’t help my strangeness… anyway, i think it was pretty interesting… that’s for perhaps another time though… (or perhaps i’m simultaneously posting about that and everything else that will ever cross my mind right this moment…)

GOTTA GET THAT PAPER, YO

anyway, today, i’m back at work having faithfully trudged through the blizzard (all two inches of it) and made my way into the office… i’m ever so behind on my writing assignments again… and that’s not really too good since i’m trying to sell myself more and more in the coming months… yep, as it turns out, it looks like the ole barrY gambiT needs a better cash flow ratio… seems like my mortgage payment is taking a significant jump later this year and i need to get ready for it… so i’m campaigning and pulling any strings i find dangling…

BIG (LINK) PIMPIN’

speaking of campaigning, i interviewed Dale Thompson from Bride over at CMCentral… i was kind of told not to post this on CMC, but i did it anyway… i guess it kind of makes me a rebel, but i felt like it was worth posting… it’s an interesting read for sure… also over there is the traditional “Our Favorites” piece that lists staff picks for the past year… coming later this week is Left to Write, an interview with Eric Owyoung of Future of Forestry, and plenty of reviews… in the near future, “Your Favorites” (for those who participated in the survey), RunDown on Books…

at theTRu, i’ve begun the 2oo6 Year in Re:TRu series with part one of three in the Year End Playlist… coming soon is a slew of lists and other such nonsense… i’ve also interviewed TobyMac and Jackson Waters, with scheduled times coming up for John Reuben and Relient K… all in a month’s work… well, i need to go get something completed before close of business…

currently listening to:

Lifesavas – Gutterfly
Robert Randolph & The Family Band – Colorblind
The Roots – Game Theory
Future of Forestry – Twilight

well… here we are again… i think that the longer i spend away from the ole blog, the more pressure i feel to write something worthwhile… of course with more pressure comes the fear of inadequacy and the defemse mechanism of avoidance… sometimes i’m just in bad shape… maybe that’s too straightforward of a confession to start back up with, but i’ve never really played by the rules anyway…

So, what have you been up to the last month or so as the calendar turned over once again and as Christmas came and went…? What have i been up to?

Christmas went fairly well, despite the last minue self-invited in-laws who showed up for the weekend… we still had a good time, but were utterly robbed of any relaxation since they’re always so much work to host… i just simply chose to focus more on the littles and the joy that they experienced during all the festivities and they are just plain awesome… and i got to watch little boy in his first Christmas program which was super cool… he held the “T” in Merry Christmas and waved to me almost the entire performance…

New Year’s was pretty quiet… i had to work one day between Christmas and New Years and then had a long weekend… but midnight found me to be the only one awake in the house… watching 21 Jump Street Season Three while my wife slept on the couch and the littles were safely tucked away in their beds… the ball dropped the next day thanks to the handy DVR… we all gathered round the coffee table and enjoyed the moment, amazed at how very old Dick Clark looks and sounds… it was sweet to see that kiss with his wife though…

Let’s see… this past weekend was one big potty… littler boy was going through the drills of potty training… fortunately, it was like 70 degrees on Saturday so the little warrior was out there all morning playing on the swingset in undies and a tee shirt… he’s doing remarkably well at learning it all… since then we’ve gone pretty much all week without any wet pants and just yesterday (i have a voicemail to verify this) he successfully completed a full transaction (trying to sound less crude)… he’s totally the bomb! (leave it to a dad to be proud of a boy’s aptitude for using the toilet)…

And here i am trying to get myself ramped up for the coming year… and looking back on the year past… and well, now that i’ve mentioned it… here’s what i did last year in the way of writing…

  • 157 Album Reviews for CMC
  • 58 Articles for CMC
    • 28 Special Features
    • 28 Interviews
    • 2 Concert Reviews
  • 29 Walk TRu’s
  • 7 inTRu-views
  • 3 Special Features (theTRu)
  • 6 iTRu-nes Playlists
  • 6 articles for HM Magazine

I think that’s pretty good… i did NOT, however, get any progress made on extra-curricular writing projects such as books, poetry, etc that i also have a desire to work on which is a real bummer to me, but i suppose i’ll get over it… this season of my life is just too stinkin busy…

Looking ahead at the year to come – i can’t hardly believe we’re already 11 days into it – i already feel depleted of energy, time and money… well, gee, there’s lots to do… so i’m gonna try to keep on keeping on… toeing the line of breakdown and keep cranking out content and keep those creative juices from freezing up…

today is a day of stupid celebration… i just played the 20,000th track that’s been logged by audioscrobbler at Last.FM… 20,000 songs… that’s at least 60,000 minutes, or 10,000 hours or 42 days… that’s a lot of music… my top artists for this period were David Crowder*Band, LA Symphony, Mars Ill, Sufjan Stevens, and Listener & EQ… top tracks: L.A.Symphony – “Timeless“, Listener & EQ – “I’ve Been Waiting For This Moment For All My Life, Hold On“, Listener & EQ – “In the Woods You Know Where Your Enemies Are“, L.A.Symphony – “Less Than Zero” and House of Heroes – “Serial Sleepers” and the 20,000th track was the live (from Kansas) version of David Crowder*Band’s “I Saw the Light” from B Collision… so a big hearty yee ha to that…

Well, i have this list of things i was going to write about, but time is escaping me and i have lots of work to do, so i’ll have to get back to that… i’ve done a couple interviews already this month and i have a few more to go so… currently writing four more album reviews, a Left to Write, a favorite albums of the year thing for CMC, the ever-fabulous Year in Re:TRu features, a 3-part Year in Re:TRu iTRu-nes playlist, and a Walk TRu… phew… currently up to consume at CMC: album reviews of Adam Watts, Manafest, Avalon, Norma Jean, Soul P, Switchfoot, Matt Redman, and dcTalk, interviews with Soul P and Adam Watts, and last month’s Left to Write – The Lessons from the Magi… meanwhile at theTRu: a batch (5-pack) of Christmas album Walk TRus from the week before Christmas and a brand spanking new Stacie Orrico Walk TRu (Scandalous i know)…

go forth, peep and be merry… that is all for now…

Brandon Heath – Don’t Get Comfortable
Robert Randolph & The Family Band – Colorblind
Pivitplex – A King in a Rookery
Braille – Box of Rhymes
Matt Wertz – Everything In Between
