Glory Revealed: Chapter 19 – Arrows
Oh yeah, we’re still on this book too… i’m about ready to start up with two other books here on the bookshelf and i realized that i didn’t cover the last two chapters of this one… and good grief it’s already September now… so let’s talk about chapter 19, shall we?…
This chapter starts off with the tale of a brush with fame… David gets to meet Billy Graham, an icon in the religious world, and a personal hero… and he’s speechless… i’ve been there… and i felt pretty silly afterwards… it’s a story that’s easy to relate to, but it’s not the point of the chapter… the point is more that Billy Graham has served as an arrow pointing the masses in the direction of Christ…
Now i’ve mostly heard this description in reference to Rich Mullins… i mean, his biography is titled “An Arrow Pointing to Heaven“… but i suppose it’s a really great way to have your life described… what i find even more interesting in this chapter though is the question posed… “Are you getting in the way of pointing others to Christ?”…
For me, there’s no greater illustration of this than when Jesus visits Jericho and the chief tax collector wants to see Him… Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he… so we all know the story, Zacchaeus is short and he wants to see Jesus but, as the account says in Luke, “on account of the crowd he could not (ESV)”… now, who’s in the crowd?… well, that would be the followers of Jesus, the “believers,” the Jews, the religious folks, and yes, the curious kind – like Zacchaeus but perhaps a wee bit taller… i remember reading this passage and focusing on Zacchaeus’ height issues and the fact that he climbs up a tree to catch a glimpse of it, but one day it occurred to me that the “religious folks” of the time were selfishly denying Zacchaeus access to Jesus, denying him (as best as they could) the opportunity to become saved himself… and i wonder how many times i’ve done that…
i know that it’s human nature to be competitive and strive to get the best things for you and yours… but that’s not the way we’re supposed to act… left to ourselves, it’s not good enough to have something good, we have to make sure that no one else has that something good too, otherwise it’s not as “special”… this is the logic behind all the “limited edition” and “special release” versions of DVDs, CDs and such… we feel like we’re getting something that other people can’t get… and that’s selfish… that’s a broken arrow…
peace… love… bdg…
