December 2008

one day left in the year 2008… and i’ve kind of been coasting to the finish line… i have things to write about i’m sure, but i’m still kind of in cruise mode… we traded illnesses over the last few weeks and i’m still a little bit beat… fortunately, i’ve got an oasis of time off here in the middle of the week and maybe i’ll get some stuff done during that time… (or maybe i’ll just play some golf on the wii)… anyway, here’s a book review and some chatter about that last post of mine…

WE WANT… THE TRUTH!!!
– to the tune of What I Like About You – Everlife

My biggest qualm about this book is the packaging. It’s a big block of a book with compartments built in for the notepad (er, reMemo pad) and the DVD, but the text itself is dwarfed in all this cardboard. I’d have much rather seen the book come out of the packaging as a separate entity as well, but that’s just my preference i suppose.

Cracking into the shiny silver packaging and digging into the actual book, though, i found it to be full of interesting tidbits, thoughts, suggestions, and ideas worthwhile for the hearing. A tad repetitious and playing simply to common sense, but definitely a thoughtful topic and one I’ve been working through personally over the last few months, so it was very timely in that regard.

It doesn’t tell you what to do with your life, but it does help you realize whether or not you’re doing what you should be doing if you hope to maximize your potential and actually (*gasp*) enjoy your work.

There are a lot of books on this topic and many of them have similar advice to offer, but this book – with the accompanying DVD – stands out a little bit in my mind. Seems to make more practical sense than, say, The Dip.

PUT THAT IN WRITING
– to the tune of Absolute – Thousand Foot Krutch

so, if you didn’t catch the gist, theTRu.print is a brand spankin’ new concept that is going to become a recurring theme… i originally came up with the idea of making my own mini-magazine way back before i was able to do any writing in actual magazines… then, the idea kind of got lost in the mix of writing for HM, taking over the helm at CMCentral and later writing for CCM… since all that’s gone bust for the most part (and i’m pretty much finished with my pity party), i’m back to square one and hey, i can do my own little mini magazine again…

So this first issue, a Christmas issue, was the introduction to what will be something that you’ll see more of in the coming year… i’m already planning the second issue, but i’m not sure if i’ll shoot for a January or a Jan/Feb deadline… i don’t want to overcommit my resources, but i also don’t want to ease up on the throttle unnecessarily because i fear that i’ll just let time and opportunity get away from me… what i want to see is for this to be a supplemental piece to theTRu that can also include advertising and maybe generate a little pocket change…

thanks to everyone who has given me feedback on the first issue, i’m taking it all into account and am excited about slowly progressing this new addition to theTRu… if you have thoughts or ideas as to what i should cover in the next issue, or if you’re interested in advertising, get in touch with me directly and we’ll see what we can see… ads will be pretty cheap to start, believe you me…

WHAT’S MORE

i’m going to try to finish up some more of the 25 or Less features, buzzing through the months of 2008 and touching on all the albums that i got my ears around as well as a few other features and such to help keep the site looking balanced and fresh… and in the distant future will be some Year in RE:TRu pieces… yee ha…

peace… love… bdg…

today, i took my first sick day of the year… while i was out, i was really out… Monday began with a sore throat and a minor cough, Monday night found little boy coming down with a grand old case of pink eye… i stayed home with him Tuesday and Wednesday and by Thursday, he was doing much better, but that which was bothering me sprung forth with the quickness and by Thursday afternoon, i was down for the count… today i stayed home, with a fever, coughing and wicked headaches… the week has totally flashed by me like a streaker and now, we’re only like two weeks away from Christmas and i feel so far behind… anyway, i promise to keep my head up long enough to pick my football winners and then maybe if i’m still up for it, i’ll get back to work on a super secret project that i’m putting together for Christmas…

off we go…

SPORTS: THE FIFTEENTH

to the tune of Let’s Get It Started – Kidz Bop Kids

well, playoffs started in one league and i lost by 0.12 points… that’s right, a very slim margin and it wasn’t cool, because i had swapped out a receiver who was injured with someone else… but apparently the system didn’t acknowledge it… and, even 1 point would’ve made the difference… so, third place is the best i can hope for there… what a disappointment… playoffs begin this week in my other league and not that i’m talking trash, but Wally is totally going down…

anyway, last week, my picks went the wrong way… 5-11… ugly… this brings my season total to 115-92-1… okay, rally caps on… i need to bring it back, despite already being down by 1… the winners this week are as follows…

Saints, Falcons, Redskins, Texans, Packers, 49ers, Seahawks, Jets, Chargers, Colts, Cards, Steelers, Panthers, Pats, Giants, and Eagles…

and that’s all he wrote…

a few days ago marked the 8th anniversary of blogging for me… On December 1st, 2000, i first opened up what i then called an online journal that consisted of a flat HTML file that i updated each time i wrote and republished to a free website service called “Homepage”… three years later, i moved over to xanga which was still just hitting its stride… since then, i’ve been through numerous iterations of the whole blogging thing and here we are today…

theTRu actually began as an outpouring of that early online journaling experiment as i included an album of the day with each entry and attempted to write up reviews for each of those… not surprisingly, i often fell atrociously behind schedule and found myself having to write “make up” reviews… (some things don’t change over time)… fortunately, though, i found my voice eventually and my current reviews read nothing like some of those early editions

Anyway, i’m not entirely certain why i’m waxing so nostalgic today – i suppose there’s something about looking forward to what the future may hold that begins with and requires a healthy look back at the past, where it all came together and how it all fell apart as the case may be – but it’s been kind of a trip reading through some of those older entries and realizing how different things are today… i mean, 8 years ago, i didn’t have a house, i didn’t have the littles, and i didn’t even have this job… much less all the experiences that i’ve had in my run as a “broke music journalist”… and now, i’m standing here at the verge of watching everything change again…

today, i’m gonna talk about the week’s football schedule, a book that i just finished, the books i’m reading currently and what i expect to get done in the next couple days… so…. let’s get it started now… let’s get it started, HA!… and away we go…

SPORTS: WEEK FOURTEEN

to the tune of Let’s Get It Started – Kidz Bop Kids

Week 14 for the NFL means that the playoffs have begun in one of my fantasy leagues and that it is only a week away in the other… fortunately i’ve managed to navigate my way into the superbowl hunt in both leagues and i plan on dominating once again… (last year i placed 1st in one league, 2nd in the other)…

on the other hand, my predictions for last week’s games didn’t work out quite as well for me… After a glorious week of 11-5, i got trounced this week, going 7-9 which brings my overall total 110-81-1… of course, the Bills used up all their scoring options the week before that and miserably put only 3 points on the board (after Lindell missed 2 more field goals)… and amazingly, 11 of the 16 visiting teams won their games…

anyway, time to bounce back… winners this week:

Chargers – this game will probably be significantly closer than it really should be, but the Chargers, on the back of LT (and his 3 TDs) will win…
Jaguars – man, they got rocked by the Texans on Monday, you know they didn’t sleep that off yet and they should bounce back against a battered Bears team that just can’t find its way…
Vikings – um, they’re playing the Lions… AP should have about 5 TDs…
Colts – if there will be any week that the Bengals actually look good, it will probably be this week, but let’s hope not… the Colts will look a lot better
Giants – best in the league, week in week out…
Titans – the Browns really have some troubles and the Titans really have a number of good ways to capitalize on them…
Falcons – didn’t they just beat the Saints? oh, no, that was the Chargers… anyway, this week, we’ll beat the Saints…
Packers – Well, they’ll at least be able to stop Slaton…
Bills – yeah, i just can’t bring myself to admit that the Dolphins might beat the Bills… i’d rather be wrong…
Jets – bouncing back in a big way… can’t believe they lost last week…
Seahawks – pay no attentin to the Thanksgiving day game, they’re ramping up as the Patriots are winding down…
Broncos – they need the victory to keep things going their way…
Cards – the Rams might not even show up for this game…
Cowboys – this may be a good matchup as it’s always good to watch Big Ben and Romo square off against each other…
Redskins – this is kind of a dud in the making as far as a Sunday Night Game, but it may also prove to be a good game…
Bucs – i’ve picked against them far too many times… the defense should be strong enouogh to derail the Panther’s momentum train…

and that’s that… i’m not sure which games i’ll get to watch yet, but since the Skins are on at night, i might get a couple extra aired…

BOOKS: DO THE RIGHT THING

to the tune of The Right Thing – Mandisa

Do the Right Thing
by Mike Huckabee

earlier this year, i read and reviewed another book from Gov. Mike Huckabee that focused on the need for character and integrity within government and this book takes that a step further, calling for not only character, but also common sense… now, don’t be mislead, this is a book about policy and it’s pretty thick with concepts, ideas and theories about how specifically the government should be run according to the Governor… sprinkled throughout the political themes are, of course, a number of stories from the campaign trail and everything presented is couched in the colloquial manner of Gov. Huckabee, but it’s understandable that some people may not enjoy this book as much as his other books…

having said that, prior to this year, i probably would’ve fallen into the category of uninterested as i had never quite put much thought into political theory… however, i really enjoyed this book and thought it was extremely well put together – minus the number of typos that jumped out at me – and i found that the biggest downside was the number of times i shook my head and wished aloud that Gov. Huckabee’s campaign had been more successful…

i enjoyed the stories, agreed with the policies as presented and i was somewhat energized by the knowledge that indeed, some people who have a bit of a platform and the potential for even more going forward have a sound mind about them… i was surprised at some of the things written about other candidates – specifically Gov Mitt Romney – but overall it was a great read and if you don’t like the whole political theorizing and whatnot, you may do better to read Character Makes a Difference or one of the other “Hucka-books”…

BOOKS: OFF THE SHELF

to the tune of I’ve Got My Eyes on You – The Clovers

So, here’s a quick update on what i’m currently reading and what you can expect to hear more about in the coming weeks…

No More Dead Dogs (Gordon Korman) [about 140 pages left]
