Before i dig into this season of LOST, i thought that i’d take a stab at another show that i’ve been watching this year since it’s recently gone on a brief hiatus from the air, returning in April… the show is Fringe and it’s further evidence that JJ Abrams has plans to turn us all into sci-fi loving, trekkie geeks…
now playing: Supernatural – dcTalk
I can’t remember if i’ve written anything of substance about Fringe in the past – i think i’ve only briefly mentioned it – but now it’s time to discuss a little bit more… It’s hard to believe that they’ve already aired 14 episodes of the show already, partly because the airings have been somewhat sporatic and partly because the series started off with a rather slow pace… This week’s episode (Ability), however, marked the “this changes everything” moment that is prominent in every JJ Abrams entity…
The beauty of the show, as with all the JJ Abrams shows that i’ve watched and enjoyed, is the intricacy and layers of planning that have clearly gone into the overarching storyline… that and the deft balance of intensity with unexpected humor… this comic relief comes from the most intense of characters, Walter Bishop, a fringe scientist who has clearly seen too much and experienced too many scientific breakthroughs… he’s quite a character and each episode reveals more about his troubled past, though there’s plenty more to be explored, especially in light of the floating “y” at the end of this week’s episode…
The other main characters have enough going for them to keep them from being flat or stock as well and the ensemble really proves to be compelling… i never watched X Files, but i’m assuming it was kind of like this, but i’m certain that Fringe takes that premise to entirely new levels…
I’m not going to get into any theories at the moment, but perhaps, i’ll revisit that in April when they begin the next batch of episodes… It’s definietly a series that’s gotten its legs under it and is worth checking out if you don’t mind some instances of grotesque afflictions… and beware, Abrams will turn you into a sci-fi junkie if you’re not careful…
peace… love… bdg…
