Happy President’s Day… hopefully, you all had a wonderful day off or at least a light day of work… i went to Lowe’s in order to replace an exploding light fixture and, after relaxing around the house, got to watch little boy at his basketball practice… he did really well and it may be starting “click” for him…
now, though, we turn our attention to a book…
now playing: Why Don’t You Look into Jesus – Larry Norman
Churched by Matthew Paul Turner
i was pretty interested in getting ahold of this book once i heard that it was coming out and when i finally did, i elevated it to the top of my waiting list… i’ve enjoyed a few of Turner’s other writings and i expected this to be a fun read as well…
often times when i finish reading a book, i begin asking questions that have been proposed during the course of the text and that was the case here… the questions i’m left with upon completing Churched are a bit different, however… the biggest questions echoing in my mind circle around Turner’s intentions… i’m not entirely certain who the intended audience is or what Turner was hoping to accomplish with this book…
Churched is certainly an enjoyable read… it’s entertaining and it’s written with a conversational tone that just makes you feel welcomed and part of the journey… but, at the end, i’m not sure where the destination was… the book seems a bit heavy on the airing of grievances and a bit light on the substance… at times it felt like a therapy session for Turner and i’m okay with that on some level… i’m even okay with the lack of resolution… i actually appreciate that honesty, but all-in-all, after the humor of some of the described scenarios wore off, it was something like an exercise in the beating of a dead horse…
Perhaps i missed some of the point – and don’t get me wrong, it is a fun read – it’s just that, i’m not sure what point, if any, that it’s making… i think it’s been pretty well established that people can run amuck when it comes to applying religion to everyday life and i’m glad that Turner was able to overcome the stumbling blocks of good intentions… i’m just not sure he’s really over it… and maybe that’s okay too…
now playing: Do Something – Sharlok Poems (ft. Cookbook, Joey the Jerk and BTwice)
Alright, that’s that… i should be back later today, but first i need to turn my attention to that there light fixture…
peace… love… bdg…
