so i’ve been quiet and for that i apologize… i’ve been busy with other pursuits – some writing, some not so much – but i’m pulling myself out of the weeds to do the weekly idol rundown… i skipped it live and am watching it on the DVR this morning… the theme this week is songs from the year you were born… this is the week that we all feel older… anyway, off we go…
THE FATE OF EIGHT
now playing: Dream On – Aerosmith
“Gokey Dokey” singing Stand By Me… Danny is the oldest contestant and they’re giving him the leadoff spot… so he’s singing the lullaby version of this tune… nice and slow and pretty quiet… and now it’s got a little bit of a rhythm behind it… oh, and then so as not to disappoint, he kicks it up a notch and sings it out… i like it alright… i think it was kind of a safe play… Randy didn’t like it, but Danny made him like it… Kara echoes Randy… Paula gushes over him… and Simon says it was overall great…
Kris “With a K” singing All She Wants to Do is Dance (dance dance)… 1985… yeah, see, this is why i feel old… anyway… he’s in the middle of a gaggle of girls… and he’s playing his guitar, not that you can hear it over the horns… it’s kind of an interesting arrangement… not what i remember of the song, but i could be wrong… overall i liked it, but again, i wasn’t blown away or anything… Kara says the arrangement made the song lose its youth… Paula says she liked the arrangment… Simon says he’s likeable, but the song was indulgent and boring… Randy says that Kris got lost in the arrangement…
Lil Rounds defending the fact that Lil is actually her name… i don’t that helps me at all… and she’s singing What’s Love Got to Do With It… and she’s pretending that she’s Tina Turner… she has a great voice, but i don’t think she’s ever learned how to not mimic and actually create her own sound, style, etc… i don’t know… it was pretty good, but i don’t think it was at all creative… Paula starts out with a comment about the way she looks – bad sign… Paula continues by echoing my thoughts… Simon calls it a copycat performance… Randy continues the sentiment and Kara talks about the leap between being a singer and an artist… Lil plays the role of Lil, talking about how she’s gonna change if America votes her through… yeah that didn’t work for dirty Alexis or tatoo queen Meghan, did it?
Anoop-a-noop… Anoop kind of apologizes for being a jerk last week… i missed that… and now he’s sitting down singing a Cindy Lauper song… True Colors… it’s really slow and it’s the type of song that got him good feedback in the past, even though the judges keep telling him to turn up the energy… i thought it was kind of off though… just kind of a guy at a party that gets put up in front of everyone else and forced to sing… Randy says he worked it out and it was hot… Kara says he controlled the song… Paula says it was brilliant… Simon says it wasn’t fantastic…
now playing: Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
“Mistah Scott-tare”… he wanted to be a train conductor… instead he creates trainwrecks on stage… well, he’s taking on a risk here by grabbing an “axe” and cranking it out to The Search Is Over and, i’m sure the judges will be nice, but he’s doing an absolutely HORRIBLE job… his vocal is all over the place and it was a bad karaoke job there… Kara says it was a very difficult song and it was partly good and partly off… Paula says she’s glad that he stepped out of his comfort zone… he interjects that he’s a punk… she says that he was at times screechy… Simon says go back to the piano, the song was horrible… he interjects that it wasn’t that bad… Simon says that, yes, it was and the guitar playing was horrible too… Randy says it was just all okay… Scott interjects again that he’s versatile…
Allison “Red” singing I Can’t Make You Love Me… i’ve never really liked this song, but it’s gonna be a great fit for her… unfortunately, she’s pulling a Lil and copying the recorded version for the most part… oh, she changed that up a little bit… some minor tweaks and an extra run there… well… she can’t make me love her, that’s for sure… but in the company that she’s keeping, she’s one of the best tonight… Paula says it was undeniably Allison… Simon says it was very good, but she’s not as likeable as she should be… Randy says she reminds him of Kelly without a face… Kara says that she’s truly talented…
Matt Giraud 5 how bad was it? he’s singing a Stevie Wonder song… and now it’s harder to hear, because the littles are up here… oh, it’s Part-Time Lover… i remember playing this on the piano and guitar growing up… mostly the keyboard actually… i had this tiny little casio keyboard that would probably fit into my pocket now… anyway, he’s done and i wasn’t impressed but it’s better than the last few weeks… Randy says it was the best of the night… Kara says it was incredible… Paula says “standing O”… Simon says better than last week… i don’t know why they like him so much…
“Wicked” Adam well, it’s a good thing that i record Fringe… they ran totally over here and this is cutting into Fringe… with the pimp spot, it’s Adam… i bet that the other contestants beg them to put him at the end… i didn’t hear what song this was, but it does sound familiar… it’s a really tender track… eerie which works really well for Adam… and he did it to the hilt… great job, again, miles and miles ahead of the other seven… Simon gives him a standing ovation…
now playing: Home Sweet Home – Carrie Underwood
MY PICKS
Bottom Three: Lil, Scott, Matt
Going Home Sweet Home: Scott
