alrighty… so we’re back again for a disco night here on American Idol… Matt5 is back as are the same batch that we had last week… well, apparently no time for the jibba jabba tonight, we’re starting off with no delay…

SEVEN… AGAIN…

now playing: You Should Be Dancing – Bee Gees

Lil Rounds well, they mean business tonight… Lil surprises me with a Chaka Khan song… and she’s dressed like Catwomen, prowling the stage and getting behind the judges inspiring Paula to stand up and dance with her… and i have to say that overall it was pretty bland, the last note and trill was nice, but not enough to make the song interesting… Randy says it didn’t show what she could do… Kara says she’s been waiting for her to sing a song like this and it wasn’t worth the wait… Paula plays the sickness card again… Simon says she looks sad and, to avoid more criticism, she interrupts him and hijacks the conversation… Simon comes back and says that she’s probably done…

Kris “With a K” how does an acoustic guitar fit into the disco format? this should be interesting… singing She Works Hard for the Money… wow… i like it… even if he has no real idea why he picked it… the arrangement really works well and either he plays guitar really well or someone else is playing louder… i definitely dug that… no karaoke there, he made the song his own… Kara says that was risky business, but it paid off… Paula says that he probably wears girl clothes (or something to that effect)… Simon says it was original and well thought out, regardless of what underwear he wears… Randy says he is ready for the big time…

“Gokey Dokey” doing September by Earth Wind and Fire… and i just realized that it being GMA Week and all, Danny may actually be in trouble this week… traditionally the most prominent “Christian” on Idol struggles to get votes during the GMA festivities… he’s doing alright though… singing well and including the background singers in the spotlight… it wasn’t fantastic, but it was good… Randy says that he turned the song into something that worked… Kara says that he Danny and disco go together like Simon and a plaid shirt… but it was solid… Paula says that he has a sexy voice… Simon says it was a solid vocal, but a clumsy performance…

Allison “Red”… singing Hot Stuff… apparently the Aerosmith version including the painted on leather pants… that’s a horrible outfit… and this arrangement doesn’t really give her any room to breathe… and by breathe, i mean show off her talents… this feels like a late-night bar performance from someone who’s hanging onto a career just a little too long… Randy says bad arrangement, but she’s great… Kara echoes that… Paula says that it was edgy and the last note was off the chart… Simon says it’s not her genre, but it was brilliant…

now playing: Boogie Shoes – KC & the Sunshine Band

“Wicked” Adam Burger King should be absolutely ashamed for ever approving that square butts commercial… Anyway, Adam is staying classy, but dressing to a t and sporting the mile-high hairdo… singing If I Can’t Have You… it’s a really slow arrangement, but well balanced… and now as he starts killing it on the chorus, Paula is all but smitten as she’s moved to tears… and it finishes nicely and i liked it… i would never say that it’s disco, though… Randy finally pulls out the “hot one tonight” comment… Kara says it was brilliant… Paula says does her absolute best to sound like an artistic critic… Simon mocks Paula and says that it was original, memorable and the vocals were immaculate…

Matt Giraud 5 oh talk about cliche… Matt5 picks Staying Alive… and comes out trying to be all Justin Timberlake, but ignoring the advice he got last week and still trying to do way too much with the melody of the song… he just seems like such a complete poser at this point to me… maybe i’m just mean, but i’m just not buying anything that he’s selling… Randy says that he didn’t like the song choice or the arrangement, but he can really sing… Kara says that he brought disco back and that it was a solid performance… Paula says that it was a strike and that he’ll stay… Simon puts a damper on it all and says that it wasn’t at all original and that he didn’t like it…

Anoop-a-noop Ryan makes a sales pitch for the designer Coke cups… and Anoop struts out in his pretty pink sweater vest and sings a slow song again, claps off-beat and tries his best to work the crowd… at least he was smart enough not to pick an upbeat, high-energy song… that’s when he really loses it all… it’s just not really that compelling… there’s not much emotion, at least real emotion… oh, that note is off… Randy says it was a rough last note, but he can sing… Kara says it was really good… Paula says that he looks fantastic – real men know how to wear pink – and that it was a great song… Simon says that the other three are too kind and that it was bad…

now playing: Home Sweet Home – Carrie Underwood

well, after listening to all these other performances… Gokey should be safe… not sure what the results show will look like, but i’ll pick four in trouble and two heading home…

MY PICKS

Four: Matt, Lil, Anoop, Red

Going Home Sweet Home: Matt, Lil

EDIT: i started writing this entry sometime last week, but was interrupted a number of times, most notably when this laptop took a header… fortunately, all the files were recoverable and i’m back up and running… most of the way…

so, i’ve had two pairs of shoes and a number of socks betray me over the last few weeks… given these shoes were 17 and 11 years old, respectively, but it’s still a sad experience for me… on top of that, a third pair is hissing at me with each step, threatening the same course of action… this may seem petty, but i really like these shoes… what am i to do?

anyway, time to dig deep and try to get some writing done… this may be a long one, kiddos, so buckle up and let’s ride…

THE NEWEST AND BESTEST

now playing: Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus – Audio Adrenaline

the most exciting news that i have to share is that of the recent releaseof the new issue of theTRu.print… that’s right, it wasn’t just a one-time thing that i did for Christmas… it’s going to be an on-going, regular thing to look forward to…

this second issue includes the same features as the first one (Left to Write, Both Sides, Album Reviews, iTRunes Playlist, etc) as well as a few other items including a feature on HOUSE, the movie and the book, and an article about John Waller… all this and it’s free, too… just head over to theTRu and download the pdf and you’re good to go… also, if you want to advertise in the next issue, get in touch with me and we’ll work something out…

YO-YO MATT

now playing: Mad Season – Matchbox 20

well, to be quick about this – since there’s a new episode on tonight and i’m sure that i’ll be long-winded about it a little later – America finally got it right by booting Matt5 off the show… unfortunately the producers and the judges love him and decided to save him, giving him another chance to ruin a perfectly good radio single… i’m not sure why they like him so much, but i’ll predict that he and Anoop bite the dust tomorrow with Lil hanging on by singing a Donna Summers tune for Disco Night tonight… (of course, that may change after i watch tonight’s show, but that’s my preliminary picks)…

WHO’S THE LOST?

now playing: Mad Season – Matchbox 20

and now it’s time for a brief look at the latest episode of Lost… it’s gonna be rough with no new episode on this week, but i’m sure we’ll manage somehow… anyway…

episode 5.13 (love that number): Some Like It Hoth… a Miles-centric storyline which immediately makes it interesting… Miles has taken over as the sarcastic and sharp-tongued character to balance out Sawyer’s maturation process and his scenes have quickly become some of my favorites… especially when he’s bantering back and forth with Hurley who has quite the grasp on wit as well…

so the episode opens with a flashback of Miles as a young boy with his mother… both have seemingly been abandoned by his father – who we earlier expected and later are assured is none other than Dr. Chang… we learn that Miles has always had this unique ability to read dead minds and that it troubles him… we also see him in a troubling 80′s-era punk outfit and hairstyle…

Meanwhile, back on the island, Miles gets recruited into the circle of trust, earning him the honor of transporting a cadaver from what will become “the hatch” and what will become the Orchid… of course, Miles wants to know what happened and he finds out that a filling from his tooth shot through his head, killing him… initially, i thought this meant that someone shot him, but then it dawned on me that the magnetic source of the hatch’s power could easily pull someone’s metal filling out of their tooth and react in such a manner…

anyway, Hurley manages to tag along, break into the circle of trust, and meddle with the relationship between Miles and Chang… perhaps the most interesting item from the episode for me was during the polar bear poop exchange between Chang and Hurley… Chang refers to the experiments on that part of the Dharma initiative as “ridiculous”… i’m getting a sense that Chang is so obsessed with this magnetic research – and apparently time travel if he’s gotten that far in his studies – that it will consume him, causing a rift between him and his family, him and the rest of the Dharma Initiative, him and the others and, most consequentially, him and the island…

ADIOS

with that, i’ll head off for now, the weather is nice and warm, and it’s a good time to go hide out in the basement to try and get cooled off… i’ll be back later for Idol, more TV talk, and some book reviews…

peace… love… bdg…
