So it all comes down to this… the final two contestants remain… Phillip Squared vs. Robo-yonce… and finally, the performance show is only one hour… less filler… three songs each – Simon Fuller’s choice, contestant pick (bet Jessica picks Beyonce), and potential lead single… off we go…

One and Lonely by Superchic[k]

Jessica Sanchez starts off with I Have Nothing from the Whitney catalog… right in her wheelhouse… no low notes and lots of moments to belt out a loud drawn-out showstopper… she kind of had an attitude the whole time through it, but it was exactly as expected… no judges comments just yet…

Phillip Phillips is dealt Stand By Me for his first performance… interesting choice, but more interesting is the arrangement… very subtle, low-key performance… you wouldn’t have guessed it based on the original version of the song, but this ended up giving him some time to shine…

the judges dish first round “gossip”… J-Lo says they are opposites and it’s hard to choose… America will have to vote for whoever makes you feel something tonight… Randy says round one went to “probably Jessica”…. for me, the winner of round one is… Jessica by a slight margin…

It Takes Two by Rob Base

oh, there is filler… Jason Derulo sings the Coca-Cola song of the minute, Undefeated which is unde…rwhelming… it’s pretty fortunate that he got his neck brace off just in time for the finale… and just in case we missed the song during the show, there’s a Coke commercial during the break…

Jessica Sanchez chooses The Prayer as her favorite moment of the season and sings it again tonight… I think she sang it as a duet earlier in the season, but it’s another ballad and, despite some stumbles along the way, it’s a pretty solid performance… oh, Spider-man trailer…

Phillip Phillips picks Billy Joel’s Movin Out and I-I-I-I can’t argue with the choice… the instrumental break there felt eerily like the weird jam band in Star Wars… and even though it’s still pretty laid back, it’s nice to hear a little variation to the songs…

the judges get to waffle some more… Steven compares Phillip to an egg that needs to hatch or go bad and apparently Jessica was better in both rounds so far… Randy calls round two a dead heat and J-Lo gives it to Phillip because he was authentic… my winner of round two: Phillip…

Three Times a Lady by Commodores

Jessica Sanchez performs her “would-be” lead single… Change Nothing… there’s a little more energy to this, but not much really… it’s topically well beyond her years… and she strikes out on some of the big notes that were clearly designed to show off her vocal prowess… I don’t think the contestants ever really perform these songs well… Randy says she’s come a long way… he didn’t love the song, but he loved that she made more of it… J-Lo thought she sang the song well, but she shouldn’t sing a pop ballad… Steven says he didn’t feel like it was the proper song for her, but he knows she can sing…

the “would-be” lead single for Phillip Phillips is called Home and it sounds a little like a Simon and Garfunkel tune… very folksey, very mellow… ooh, a drum corp… WINNER!… here’s the major difference between Phillip and Jessica… he understands who he is… he has his own identity and he conveys that through the songs that he sings… she just wants to be popular and famous… she’s a starlet in the making who will do what she’s told as long as she gets to be in the headlines… Randy says he loved the song, he loves Phillip, he loved the marching band, he loved everything, it was perfect… J-Lo says it was so different and moving and it was a Phillip Phillips song… Steven says by virtue of his vulnerability and style he made the world his home… he was perfect tonight and he’s the man…

winner of round three: Phillip, duh…

Please Remember Me by Scotty McCreery

I almost forgot to finish this up and post it… anyway, between the two, Phillip probably had the better night. Furthermore, he’s a guy and guys pretty much always win these days besides, Phillip is quite marketable and almost comepletely unique… (not that it’ll translate that way to an album, but it works now)… so your next American Idol is… PHILLIP PHILLIPS… right?

peace… love… bdg…
